Welcome to Heaven

Exactly 25 years ago I was given the opportunity to open the One event in Los Angeles, which took place at the National Orange Show.  I put together a new funky-tech house mix to celebrate the experience.  I remember that huge hanger area could easily hold two football fields, which at the time was one of the largest sound systems I had ever seen assembled, provided by The Shredder who was a legend in the LA concert sound community.  There were 5 stacks of cabinets each about 20 feet high, one stack in each corner with a large full circular array 30 feet in diameter in the center of the hanger, with many Intellabeams and laser arrays anchored in the upper scaffolding.  That heart attack sound system shook the entire hanger space to the core, and as a DJ it felt like you were riding a sonic monster.  I hope you enjoy this 25th anniversary funky-tech house DJ set!

Anyone who knew me from the 1990’s knows that I am a huge breakbeat fan, and if you listen to my DJ live sets like June Boom, Fear the Breaks, Welcome to Heaven, Aumnia, Left Coast Funk, etc. you will understand how much I love breakbeats.  I still like to weave breakbeat tracks into my current progressive house DJ sets.  I put together a new progressive ambient breakbeat chillax sunrise set to welcome the Spring season for 2023.  My DJ picture is from a rave I played in Los Angeles called Invasion 2, it was 45 degrees outside that night, hence the jacket.  I hope you enjoy the music!

Third Man Factor

In the early 90’s I recorded a mixtape called Sector 101, it was popular for some time and I got to play part of this set on Power Toolz 106 FM which was a DJ radio show broadcast in Los Angeles on Saturday nights (this is where I met Richard Humpty-Vision, Tony B, Sweedish Egil, and Gerry Meraz).  This is also when I started to play DJ sets on Sweedish Egil’s Groove Radio and KSPC.  I put a link to my original mixtape recording below.  Back then DJs were making lots of mixtapes to hand out to promoters and fans, it was like a DJ’s business card.  We also had to deal with the 90 minute hard time limit, 45 minutes per side of an audio cassette tape, which was pretty annoying.  I decided to record a new progressive house mix as a sequel to this tape.  It is interesting to hear how a DJ’s sound has evolved over the last 30 years, and how the Internet’s streaming format lends so much more to creativity and audience reach than the humble mixtape did back in the 90’s.  I hope you enjoy the music, and be on the lookout for more sequels in my Sector mix series!

In the 90’s I was working my way through college, and I used to listen to drum & bass while I did my homework, so in a very significant way this style of music helped me get through a tough engineering degree.  Some of my favorite DJs from this era are LTJ Bukem, Kruder & Dorfmeister, and Dr. S Gatchet.  I hope you will enjoy this dreamy drum & bass mix, and may it help other students get through long hours of homework as well.  I believe this type of music can induce a higher consciousness flow state that enables people to focus intensely on any project.

Also, yesterday I saw in the news that MC Conrad passed away, he was 52 years old.  LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad were truly a magic duo for drum & bass, so go back and listen to their music from the 90's and 2000's if you're not familiar with it, it's amazing.  RIP MC Conrad.
