Céline talks about how listening to music is conditioned by context, based on her own experience as a performer. Performing in a music festival, an art institution, a concert hall or a club are very different experiences, with different conditions, sets of rules and expectations. She's interested in questioning the cleavage this creates between audiences and how it is rooted in issues related to class, sex and race.

Céline Gillain is an artist whose work explores the meeting points between different fields of art and music such as performance, storytelling, experimental and electronic music, deconstructing the codes and hierarchies that govern them. Exposing the ever growing precarity of the artist, her work questions the mechanisms by which ideas are transformed into commodities in mainstream culture.

Gag Reflex's moniker is an apt embodiment of her musical output. It's propulsive; pushing you forward then pulling you back, dragging you under then spitting you out.

It's down to the intriguing spread of influences that fuel the US-born, Berlin-based producer and DJ's work. While there's nods to percussive noughties techno, classic rave and early UK dubstep in there, you'll hear echoes of her formative love of punk bands like Crass and The KLF bubbling underneath the surface too.

As a DJ she's made quite the name for herself in the US, holding residencies in Portland and San Francisco, as well as her former home of Seattle, where she ran transfeminist club night BLOOM: a space to inspire connection, catharsis and experimentation within the local scene and beyond.

The connections that she's made have led to releases on international labels like Scuffed Recordings, Violet's naivety sub-label and, most recently, on the former's newly minted sister label Angel with her Lush EP, which drops on 21st April.

In the lead up to the release she takes the controls of this week's Shine A Light On mix with a blend of murky, percussive and weighty sonics for the heads down and the hands up crew...

Gag Reflex is like a dream. No, better, cause dreams aren't absolutely perfect and don't smell nice. So yeah, she's like... heaven personified! Hyper talented (like, hyper hyper); funny af, v v kind, extremely cute, brave.. the list goes on. this seattle bb works hard for her community, not only by being a lovely friend but also by throwing her transfeminist bloom nights and DJing like a hurricane of perfection for the benefit of the realest ravers and misfits. i've been lucky enough to hang out with her and some of her lovely crew in seattle and felt right at home with them. oh lawd i also smoked some weed there that knocked me out but Odessa was right my by side in the club while i snored with my mouth open, protecting me from outside threats lol! anyway - if you haven't yet, you should listen to her naivety EP 'The Fae' and her track on the naive comp cause you'll get an idea of how much of an incredible artist wer're talking about here (more things to come!). this naivetape is a prime example of why she is so good, mixing raucous rave inspiration with elegant techno, acid of the highest order, electro and some delicious club weirdness for good measure. i just.... i just wished we lived in the same city. but at least i'm lucky enough that we exist at the same time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ that's my consolation prize.
