"Back To Scratch"
Since 2003, DJ Grazzhoppa’s DJ Bigband has been on a journey crossing both musical and geographical borders. The DJ Bigband proved – with an ensemble of 12 DJs – that turntablism can be taken out of the traditional hip-hop context and presented this musical extravaganza at festivals as well as in opera houses across Europe.
DJ Grazzhoppa started his first DJ Bigband consisting of 6 turntablists. This raw version of the DJ Bigband performed in more than 20 theatres and festivals.
In 2004, the DJ Bigband doubled in size and Fabrizio Cassol, saxophonist and composer of Aka Moon, got the call to tame this twelve-headed beast with 120 fingers. Vocalist Monique Harcum poured her soulful voice over a few of the tracks, and a visual décor was developed to complete the musical experience. DJ Grazzhoppa’s DJ Bigband &amp; Visual Vectorz Project took on Europe and performed for an enthousiastic crowd everywhere they went: from the Brussels opera house to the legendary festival grounds of Roskilde (DK) and LowLands (NL).
Miel Vanattenhoven (Jazz Middelheim) had especially requested the DJ Bigband in 2005. He asked them to work with the legendary jazz trio Aka Moon (Fabrizio Cassol). At the Jazz Middelheim festival, scratches were mixed with the rhythms and bass lines of Stéphane Galland and Michel Hatzigeorgiou. Sparks flew between both bands, and the project was picked up by the Banlieues Bleues festival (Paris), the Nazomerfestival (NL), and the KVS (Brussels).
The DVD is the March 13, 2007 recording of the DJ Grazzhoppa’s DJ Bigband vs Aka Moon concert at the KVS (Royal Flemish Theatre) in Brussels.
In 2006, DJ Bigband developed a new project, Djamsessions. The DJs expanded their skills by starting a dialogue with various Belgian and international musicians from different musical genres.
They put needles to the records and challenged not only musicians but also dancers and visual artists to a head-to-head battle in musical banter. Some of the musicians included Ronny Jordan, Joseph Bowie, Kris Defoort, Laurent Blondiau, Jozef Dumoulin, Jef Neve, Toots Tielemans, Vincent Brijs, Peter Lesage, STIJN, Steven De Bruyn, and Dez Mona. The Djamsessions, 30 sessions in European art centres, were very intense and inspiring, which only added to the skills and visions of the DJs.
With their next project, Around the World in 80 Beats (2008), the DJs continue their search for new possibilities for the turntable. The choice to explore a mixture of traditional and classic rhythms grew from the contacts and collaborations with artists from different musical and cultural backgrounds from around the world.
Now the DJGDJBB is back on the road with the "Back To Scratch" project .They are takin it back to the roots of hiphop with 6 Dj's and Monique Harcum on vocals ofcourse.
