Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's classic LP 'Mecca and the Soul Brother' turned 30 recently, so reminisce for a spell with a mix of OG Samples, Remixes, & Blends.
The way Pete sampled old jazz/funk/soul records and layered them over hard, dusty drums was masterful (how he caught that little part on the fadeout of an Ohio Players record for 'Lots Of Lovin' still amazes me).    
Combine that with C.L.'s sharp yet fluid lyricism (how many MC's could rhyme like THIS back in '92??), and you unquestionably have one of the pillars of early 90's NYC boom bap.

Their watery landscapes and drum manipulation (using just 1/4 of a break loop) influenced a whole new style of beat making. A Tribe Called Quest elevated the musicality of Hip-Hop without playing a single note. The Dusty Handclap No. 19 (A Tribe Called Quest Tribute)

Found this little gem on pipomixes a few years back, no trace of it on Soundcloud, so I thought why not spread it around. This needs to be heard. The supremely talented DJ Shortkut of the Invisbl Skratch Piklz lays down an amazing mix of original tracks reconfigured into the hip-hop tracks that sampled them. 

It's only just occurred to me that subliminal inspiration for the jungle reconstruction/tribute aspect of my Eclectic Sample mixes came in part from this guy. Thanks, Shortkut.
