After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

So when we early this year finally found the time to sit down and make a full length album there was so much we wanted to try out. Fur Coat is one of the most hard-working and passionate duos in the business. On an endless quest for an original groove, irresistible hook and utmost production quality, their wildly successful releases for the likes of Hot Creations, Bpitch Control and of course Crosstown Rebels has ensured that the duo a weighty touring schedule and loyal following. Unearthed and championed by original Rebel Damian Lazarus, the duo released their impressive debut album ‘Mind Over Matter’ in 2012 on Crosstown Rebels

Since the album dropped, the pair have been called upon to sprinkle the unmistakable Fur Coat magic to reworks of legends such as Timo Maas & Robert Owens as well as hot newcomers Kidnap Kid & Joy Wellboy. April 2014 saw another landmark as the guys released their first original material since Mind Over Matter. 'Theres No Time EP' came out on the much hyped Hot Creations imprint from Jamie Jones & Lee Foss and is still getting hammered by some of the biggest players in the game today. Hot on its heels came 'The Right Move EP' for Ellen Allien's legendary Berlin imprint Bpitch Control, and featured the vocal talents of Jaw from DOP, again cementing Fur Coat’s name at the top of the industry.

Adam Nathan is a London-born, Toronto-raised DJ and producer quickly making a name for himself on the global deep house scene. Previously collaborating under various monikers and part of Toronto’s influential Release Records crew, Adam is now unveiling potent solo tracks under his name. This new EP for Viva Recordings, titled Soulmachine, has the well-honed sound of a studio veteran, with a smooth, warm sound and emotive passages. Adam’s roots as a drummer come through with the stripped down emphasis on rhythm, while melodic flourishes and dynamic builds play masterfully on top. 

The EP opens with ”Soulmachine”, featuring dramatic piano chords and a fine, pulsating kick drum. The cut builds in a mesmerizing fashion, ending in a beautifully atmospheric breakdown. “Us and Them” gets into even deeper territory, full of synth pad transmissions, shimmering sonics, and the stirring, echoing speech that enters near the halfway point. “Coda”, directly inspired by the legendary nightclub of the same name, closes things out with a classic feel. Drawing upon the deepest influences of ‘90s house music, “Coda” is dreamy, multilayered treat for the latest of nights and the most intimate of dance floors.

The Toronto veteran Andrew McDonnell wants to get your feet moving and your soul swaying with his new Musical Engagement EP on Kindisch. The two tracker features all originals from Andrew. The title track is a seven-and-a-half minute journey into the thick fog of the night, punctuated by a firm kick and accented with various atmospheric swells and ambience. The track dives deep and stays strong, pulling the listener in close. ‘Engaged in Music’ strikes a different chord, flashing a livelier vibe and with a more driving percussive backbone. The music grooves hard and carries perhaps a bit more juice than the title track, giving this track a slight boost in energy. Together the two track exemplify the producers talent for this special kind of dancefloor magic.

Melchior Sultana is back on his own Profound Sound with another cascading celebration of sheer musicality and sunkissed dancefloor dreams for sunsets that never end. If "Timeless" doesn't transport you to a balmy, carefree state of mind then you should probably see a doctor - every inch of yearning synth, guitar, bass and beat is tenderly engineered for pure escapism. "The Message" has a similarly rich sound bank, but it adopts a duskier mood that ever so slightly edges towards the club instead of the terrace. "I'm Serious" skips past the peak of the night and beckons you straight through to the after party - equal parts seduction and wind down for dancers with the Mediterranean sun in their soul.
