Pullin From the Stacks Podcast (Episode 1)

Pullin some more eclectic protest records from the past that hopefully connects with the present. Big shout out to everyone staying in the streets and supporting the families of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and all the people murdered at the hands of law enforcement.

Two legends have passed on recently - Roberta Flack and Gwen McCrae, both of whom had records that have been important to me for many years. Unfortunately some of my Roberta Flack records were damaged in a flood years ago, and so I tried to pull a few favorites from what I still have, and mostly less obvious pieces from both artists catalogs. That being said, I still included two big hits on here because of the impact that each song had on me - McCrae's "90% of Me" is such vintage funk, a record I got in my earliest days of digging, and I will always cherish. And Flack's amazing duet with Donnie Hathaway, "Back Together Again" - I will never forget when Bobbito dropped this at APT in late 2001 and DJ Center and I lost our minds. RIP to these incredibly amazing women.

There was a time when I owned 4-5 copies of Sly Stone's "FRESH" album, it was so vitally important to me. I remember hearing it for the first time in the 90s and it blew my mind. I preached the Sly gospel since to many friends of my age in the years since. That album will always be a cornerstone of musical history and importance to me, and helped me on my record digging journey forward. So many people have covered his songs over the years, in so many funky and creative ways, so I've included a number of those covers on this episode, along with some of my favorite originals of his. RIP the legend Sly Stone, thank you so much for all the beautiful music!

His DJing style blends a unique mix of disco, soul, jazz, and electronic music, exploring the rich history of black music. I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music - the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...

This episode I invited my record-digging partner in crime, DO77 aka Verbal Math of Dollabin, to spin some of his favorites. It's a great fusion-filled set filled with all kinds of treats! In DO77's own words: "I love jazz fusion so I know it can go off the rails real quick. Don’t worry, I just threw together some chill fusion grooves by some of the usual suspects, a couple of lesser known gems, and Frank Zappa who is a genre by himself. I also dropped in one of jazz’s most important current voices, Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah. Thanks to Ian Head for the invite! Hope you all enjoy."
