After I finished recording this episode, I realized I'd played two records featuring Jorge Santana - one by his group Malo, and another with him as a guest with the Fania All-Stars. I looked him up and realized he had sadly passed away last spring. Rest in Power Jorge Santana! I hope everyone enjoys his guitar work on these tunes as well as the other tracks featured here.

This episode I invited my record-digging partner in crime, DO77 aka Verbal Math of Dollabin, to spin some of his favorites. It's a great fusion-filled set filled with all kinds of treats! In DO77's own words: "I love jazz fusion so I know it can go off the rails real quick. Don’t worry, I just threw together some chill fusion grooves by some of the usual suspects, a couple of lesser known gems, and Frank Zappa who is a genre by himself. Best known as one-half of soul duo Myron & E, Newark native Eric ‘E’ Cooke aka Eric Boss or E Da Boss is the definition of a multifaceted artist. It began with DJing and a love of hip-hop, which eventually turned into producing, and ultimately brought him to singing and songwriting.

Eric got his first taste of music by playing records during family card games and fish frys. As a teen, he began collecting records of his own and DJing, hanging out at the Music Factory and Rock and Soul in New York City. After relocating to southwest Virginia, he graduated high school and began spinning at parties, which allowed him to invest in an Ensoniq ASR-10 keyboard, two Technics turntables and an eight-track recorder. He later moved to San Francisco where he met Myron Glasper while on the road with the Bay Area’s Blackalicious, and shortly after Eric released an independent record as a producer under the name E da Boss.

While touring in Finland for his solo project, Eric connected with producer Didier Selin of The Soul Investigators, whose work with singer Nicole Willis helped define them as one of Europe’s foremost retro-soul bands. Back in the U.S., Eric recruited Myron as a singing and songwriting partner, and with the production of Didier behind them Myron& E was born. Together they released a string of successful 45 singles on The Investigators‘ label Timmion Records, went on to release their debut album “Broadway” on renowned label Stones Throw in 2013, collaborated on a 45 with Russian funk band The Soul Surfers on Ubiquity Records, and toured the world.

In the meantime Eric continued to spread the jam of his talent far and wide; he contributed vocals to a track for UK sensation The Gene Dudley Group‘s sophomore album on Wah Wah 45s, released material under the bandname Lucid Paradise alongside Ishtar , founded and is one half of electro-boogie duo The Pendletons, duetted with Gizelle Smith on two tracks from her solo album “Ruthless Day” on Jalapeno and, more recently, began a prolific collaboration with Bjoern Wagner and Steffen Wagner (The Mighty Mocambos / Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band).

Mint Condition w/ E Da Boss - It's A Thin Line (NTS) 8/31/20

Went into the crates to pull a few selections from the great jazz label Muse. Tried to stay away from some of the sample-favorites (no Walt Barr or Catalyst this time around). Instead, it's a journey into the a variety of styles and flavors, some creative and beautiful music made by a wide range of musicians in the 70s and early 80s. There's definitely another stack of records I wasn't able to include this round, so maybe a part two will be in the works for the future.

Rounding out the year, I selected a few of my favorite 2020 aquisitions - I can't call most of these digs because I think all of them appeared in my mailbox at some point. A few I'd been after forever, along with a couple beautiful new releases. I hope everyone enjoys, and I want to again extend a huge thanks to all those who've tuned in this past year, and those who graciously put together guest sets for the podcast - J.
