Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 176

This past weekend I hit up Egon's store Rappcats where DJ Shadow was selling some of his vast collection. I missed the opening day but snuck in and out on Sunday with a random high school band record, featuring a nice cover of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" as well as some original tunes. That record reminded me I'd been wanting to do a school band episode of Pullin for awhile now, so it was a good inspiration to dig through my crate of very random college and high school music for a couple of my favorites. You never know what you're getting with these records - so many are poor quality recordings or cheesy renditions, but among the many there are some real gems. Hope you dig.

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 180 (School Band Records)

MIMS is delighted to share a special and certainly eclectic mix from Lorenzi Morresi, DJ, producer, musician and co-founder of Supereclectic, whose recent album 'Music For Closed Airports’ is a wonderful mix of live compositions and studio productions that stretch out across jazz funk, italian library and electronica.

@lorenzomorresi: “This mix was recorded in my countryside studio in Le Marche region in Italy. It features some of my own music as well as artists and tracks that inspired my new album 'Music For Closed Airports'.”

Previous releases included a sold-out 45 collaboration with Tenderlonious, on 22a Music,  that we raved about on release, and the first taste of much more to come from the pair.  And not forgetting his debut album ‘Object Melodie’ on Fly By Night Music, another MIMS favourite. 

Supereclectic is a new record label founded in 2020 by Italian DJ's and producers Lorenzo Morresi and Tommaso Cicconi. They both share a passion for high quality music where genre knows no bounds, although their label and DJ sets tend to focus on jazz, funk, fusion, contemporary experimental and Italian library rarities. The label has already released two eps featuring obscure jazz funk band Session Segreta and Italian jazz guitarist Giulio Romano Malaisi. This year the label released Lorenzo Morresi's 2nd album 'Music For Closed Airports' and promises part one in the Supereclectic Edits series that will feature rare edits and represses from their record collections.

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 188

Ahead of the much anticipated release of Música Macondo's 'Brasil Novo' compilation of deep, raw and contemporary Afro Brazilian samba, we are exited to premiere Grupo Bongar's electric take on Samba de Coco, "Vento Corredor". 

Música Macondo has unearthed eight contemporary Brazilian tracks on compilation 'Brasil Novo', disseminating the rich and percussive heritage of Brazil and Samba De Coco. Selected by DJs Tahira (Sao Paulo) and Tim Garcia (London), the diversity and positivity of Brazil shines, featuring elements of samba, candomble, batuques, jazz, folk and beyond, designed with the esoteric dancefloor in mind.

DJ Tahira is a massive Brazilian music fan and has been on a research journey for a number of years, dedicated to the preservation and archiving of music made or influenced by black and indigenous Brazilians. Based out of Sao Paulo he has a particular interest in the history of Samba de Coco, a folkloric musical form that was very popular in, (and probably originated from), the north east of Brazil, by slaves and indiginous people from working class backgrounds who came together, making a rhythmical mesh of sounds dating back hundreds of years and allowing them to carve a unique cultural identity.

Ignored or disregarded as inferior by Brazil's recording industry, there are few existing original recordings of this music from the twentieth century, relying instead on oral tradition and carnivals like those in Recife or Pernambuco. In recent times there has been a flux of contemporary proponents who mix Samba de Coco with other contemporary Brazilian musical forms. Brasil Novo features both the roots, and more divergent fusions.

In the current cultural impasse that Brazil is experiencing, with artists and musicians experiencing the withdrawal of funding and services and with concerts and clubs yet to get back to pre-pandemic levels, it's never been so important to give visibility to contemporary creativity. This compilation not only gives a needy international platform to new artists, it enables an archive of Afro Brazilian culture that in some cases is disappearing. It’s also a fine example of resistance and positivity, against the odds.

Grupo Bongar, well known in Brazil and internationally, combine all manners of Brazilian folk, axé and samba, whilst they also run a centre for percussion aimed at galvanising musicians from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Sorry for the long delay, been a busy month. Starting to pack the records up now, so this will be my last mix at my current residence, and probably for another few weeks until I get things unpacked on the other side of LA. Kept things thematic for this one though - all jazz-related releases on the Melodiya label, which was the Soviet-era label that released records from not only Russia but other countries in region. Been slowly building a small stack of vinyl from this label and figured I'd play a few here. Enjoy!
