Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 240 - January Jazz Finds

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This megamix serves as short form companion to our recent 1994 mixtape, this time cramming 20 classic tracks into a brief 4 minute run time. Artwork pays homage to the classic Payday Records company sleeve.

It's been three months since I released the limited cassette version of this and so I wanted to share the full version now that the cassettes are mostly sold out (a few still remain - http://djianhead.bandcamp.com) - hope folks dig it. The full story is on the Bandcamp page but I made this breaks mix to submit to Wax Poetics, who rejected it so I figured I'd put it out myself as a fundraiser for Palestine and abolitionist organizations in the U.S. Over $500 was raised in support! Pullin from the Stacks Episode 243 - New Selections

I don't remember who hipped me to Frank Cunimondo - I think I saw one of his records in Rob and Damien's old shop Sideman Records and was intrigued but didn't buy it then. And then maybe someone posted on IG something off of "Echoes" and it was right up my ally - beautiful piano trio jazz with some rhodes as well. Snagged a copy of that album at WMFU a year later and was hooked. I know Dilla sampled one of his albums early but it's actually the only album of his I don't own - I just can't really get into Lynn Marino's voice, so that one isn't for me. But his other stuff is beautiful, independently released Pittsburgh jazz. I tried to play something from all his various albums (minus the Marino one) on here plus a bonus non-vinyl track. Enjoy!

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #9 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1995, a year which arguably typifies what is often referred to as the ‘mid 90s sound’, with filtered and layered grooves accompanying crisp programmed drums at a tempo generally far lower than in previous years. The general trend for decreasing tempos peaked in ’95 with a significant proportion of single releases barely breaking the 90bpm mark. 1995 is also notable for the rise of a darker more melancholy production style with even the darkest of backdrops (Mobb Deep’s Shook Ones Part 2 being a good example) scoring as unlikely club hits. Artwork pays tribute to heavy hitting 90s imprint Loud Records.
