BeatPete - Beatstrumentals - Mix 2014 - Presented by The Find Magazine

A tape I made five years ago after the passing over radical peoples historian Howard Zinn. Here are my liner notes from 2010: 

Just as many of us djs and producers look up to those who work and look outside the box, I believe in looking outside the so-called box when thinking about history, politics and society in general. So did legendary historian and author Howard Zinn, who sadly passed just a little over a month ago. His book “Peoples History of the United States” was his attempt to tell history from voices and viewpoints often shut out of history text books. I found it inspiring, as well as his belief that “neutrality” was basically bullshit; that if you are silent, you are siding with the status quo. In his words, “you can’t be neutral on a moving train.”

So this tape is a bit of an experiment – originally I was going to just do an instrumental tape of some my favorite beats, especially records often forgotten or overlooked. But I felt it needed something more, and so I dropped in some tidbits from various interviews with Zinn, who I believe was often overlooked himself. For someone whose book has sold well over a million copies worldwide, and who has been a commentator, activist and author for several decades, his passing drew very little attention in the media. Columnist Bob Herbert summed it up best, writing “His death this week at the age of 87 was a loss that should have drawn much more attention from a press corps that spends an inordinate amount of its time obsessing idiotically over the likes of Tiger Woods and John Edwards.”

The records I pulled for this mix come from a variety of producers, and I tried to keep it obscure but dope, lots of underground 12inches that I feel are often forgotten. I’ve included a tracklisting of the producers below, in order.

The excerpts of / about Howard Zinn are from Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman, Bill Moyers Journal on PBS, and Prison Radio with Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Zinnstrumentals Vol. 1 (2010 Mixtape)

This week marks the five-year anniversary of Howard Zinn's passing. I thought I'd follow up on my tape from 2010 with a new "Zinnstrumentals" mix of Zinn excerpts over blended beats. I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music - the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...

Roy Ayers 75th Birthday Mix

My father is really heavy into Jazz. My childhood is peppered with Latin jazz, and the fragrant smell of leather in our home. I remember listening to Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto bored stiff. I didn’t really understand how this music was shaping my taste until at the age of thirteen I discovered hip hop. It became a sort of lens for me to examine the rest of the musical world through, and the use of sampling became a fixation. I was always intrigued to hear how my favorite producers would take a dusty old snippet, flip it, and make it new again. My favorite sounds were always those familiar jazz rifts I heard at home. As an adult I began to seek out those records, rediscover the music I grew up with and expand my musical horizons. This mix is about a lot of things for me. I look at my musical taste and how it has changed throughout the years. I look at the partnering of my father and I to establish our bag company, Tucker & Bloom. To me it’s as much about the journey in life as where you are going, even if you can’t smell the leather all the time.-Case Bloom

North To South Vol.1

A tribute to the living legend Herbie Hancock! An adventure through some of the many styles in which Hancock created and ventured, from funk to solo piano, plus a couple snippets from interviews Hancock did recorded to vinyl. 

The piano is my favorite instrument, and this is the first in a series of Pullin from the Stacks tributes to some of my favorite pianists.
