IBAN REUS presents “GOD BLESS STEVE EP” (MONIQUE SPECIALE)


From the first beat, this "God Bless Steve" teleports us to a deep time and space division with a brief progressive blast –techno house or house techno?- in which there is no room for mediocrity, favors or distractions. We are facing the roundest track -skillfully shaped and with a unique and deep soul showing its high class- Iban Reus has produced so far for a foreign label, in this case the subdivision of the Canadian label Monique Musique, which is known as Monique Especiale. A track with a great appeal and elegance, sophistication without discussion and the strange double quality contained in that will make clubbers of any dance floor in the world dance, and will touch the soul of those looking for something else than just movement in an inescapably fascinating track -that beautiful dark light coming from the bassline!-, and at the same time charming ... even snakes.

The remix of this great track by Ronan Portela shows that behind that appearance, certainly friendly and adorable of the original "God Bless Steve", there is certainly a dangerous substrate, highly sensual and carnal. The Argentinian artist customizes the track and perverts it from the deeply tech, so that only the author would recognize its guts, here unstructured and left to dry in the sun, playing at six o'clock in the dark in a club. Well Mr. Portela, despite everything –good and wicked-, you persuaded us.

Finally, in "The Truth" (Original Mix), Iban Reus moves towards those high-octane tech-house productions which deejays and producers usually create. However, to tell you the truth, this track is a step forward in his vertiginous career as a skilled contemporary musician. Why? Simple: because he has done the right thing. Its initiation and development, its powerful rhythmic skeleton, its harmonies, rhythm and melody, their successful vocal elements, etc… are meticulously located in the track, with mathematical precision, without thereby losing spark, taste and dance. In short, excellent and frightening.

Desde el primer beat este “God Bless Steve” nos tele-transporta a una división temporal y espacial deepera y dotada de un breve ramalazo progresivo -¿es house tecnificado o techno ajausado?- en el que no hay espacio para medianías, favores o distracciones. Estamos ante el tema más redondo -por diestramente alicatado, su peculiar y honda alma y la tremenda clase que desprende- que hasta el momento ha pergeñado Iban Reus para un sello foráneo, en este caso la subdivisión del label canadiense Monique Musique que no es otro que Monique Speciale. Este track tiene tanta pegada como elegancia; un grado de sofisticación sin discusión y esa extraña doble cualidad que consta en que hará bailar a los clubbers de cualquier pista de baile del planeta y también pellizcará el alma de esos, otros, que buscan algo más, que solo provocar el movimiento, en un track ineludiblemente fascinante –¡que bella luz oscura despide su bassline!- a la par que encantador… hasta de serpientes. 

El remix que de este temazo firma Ronan Portela nos demuestra que tras esa apariencia ciertamente amistosa y adorable del original de “God Blees Steve” hay un sustrato ciertamente peligroso por sensual y altamente carnal. Este artista argentino customiza el tema que da título al ep y lo engolfa desde lo abisalmente tech, de tal forma que solo su autor sabría reconocer sus tripas, aquí desestructuradas y puestas a secar al sol, sonando a las seis de la mañana en la oscuridad de un club cualquiera. Bien Sr. Portela, a pesar de todo -bueno y encanallao- nos has convencido.

Finalmente, en “The Truth” (Original Mix), Iban Reus se muestra más entre esas hechuras tech-houssies de alto octanaje en las que habitualmente se deambula como dj y productor. No obstante, y para ajustarmos a la verdad, este track supone un paso adelante en su vertiginosa carrera como hábil músico contemporáneo. ¿Por qué? Muy sencillo: porque lo clava. Su inicio y desarrollo, su potente armazón rítmico, sus armonías, cadencia y melodía, sus acertados elementos vocales, etc. están ubicados en el tema de forma tan sumamente milimétrica, con exactitud matemática, sin que por ello pierda chispa, gusto y bailongo. En fin, sobresale y asusta.

His habitual presence as guest DJ in the highly frequented and popular opening and closing parties of the Space Ibiza, are probably the most relevant proof of his uprising career as a professional DJ of international calibre. Most probably Iban Reus will manage, one of these days, to make his own sound flourish into a house that is elegant like Denis Ferrer’s, with the pulse of Joris Voorn’s techno and having the funky soul of Maceo Plex… it’s a great goal for which he will keep on fighting.

As a producer he is a tireless worker, knowing that to make the tunes most listened to and danced on you need to put in all the time and energy that you’ve got. He’s capable of publishing songs in direct collaboration with DJ such as Stefano Noferini, Tiger Stripes, DJ PP, Mario Ochoa, Negru, Luca M, UGLH,Tony Dee, Daniel Trim…and, at the same time, signing with Insert Coin Records, the tech house master piece “Space Expedition” that he produced under the name Kodiak together with his associate Rad Damon. This duo that has been working together for 15 years and have developed a way of working that is now perfectly complementary, this allows them, once they are creating or sharing sessions, to go right to the essential and they know just how to make things flow, which is highly appreciated on the dance floor and the radio waves of his radioshow.

Not to forget, the most important, if Iban Reus is having fun then everybody else will, that is how he is.
