A pair of Classic Hip-Hop Stepper's remixes inspired by an old mixtape idea Maker and I had many years ago... Having a Stepper's set ready at a moment's notice is damn near a requirement for being a Chicago DJ. So, seeing as I had no idea Steppin was a thing prior to transplanting here, it was a verrry sharp learning curve once I started DJing around town. What I found most interesting, when thinking of it as a genre of music, is that anything can be a Stepper. No matter the artist, or song, or category. As long as it has the right movement.

A fact that makes for fun times in the studio! These remixes come from sessions earlier this Summer when it was just starting to feel like Summer. I was going for a 'windows rolled down on a Sunday afternoon' vibe. Also, I just love putting Hip-Hop over smooth sh*t lol. Enjoy!

In the summer of 2017, Good Vibrations Music unleashed its debut release - a rich, indulgent and groovy house workout from label founder Sean McCabe and honey-voiced soul vocalist Mike City entitled 'I Know Someone'. Almost two years on, the song has been given a new lease of life by New York house legend Frankie Feliciano.

Feliciano has long been renowned for the quality of his 'Ricanstruction' remixes, named in tribute to his Latin heritage and the Ricanstruction Records imprint he established in 1997. Fittingly, his suite of fresh remixes begins with a fresh 'Ricanstruction Vocal' of 'I Know Someone', where Mike City's silky smooth vocal, toasty keys and mazy synthesiszer solos stretch out above a distinctively swung Latin house rhythm and a jaunty synth bassline. This trademark soulful vocal version is accompanied by 'Ricanstruction' Instrumental and Radio Edit mixes, as well as a mesmerizing 'Beatapella' in which Mike City's breathtaking vocal takes pride of place above Feliciano's toughened-up Latin house beats.

Feliciano isn't finished there, though. He also offers up a chunky 'Classic Vocal' that sees him lay the emotion-rich vocal and his own twinkling keys, colourful synthesizer lines and headline-grabbing bassline over a throwback house beat. It's one that should please the old school house heads. Throw in a 'Classic Instrumental' and a spacey, beat-free 'KeyApella' for the DJs, and you have a fittingly impressive collection of reworks from one of American house music's most distinctive producers.

Next up in the series is a remix of Sade "I Couldn't Love You More" featuring Armando Perez (of ÉSSO) on guitar, and artwork by Ivan Vazquez. This release is accompanied by a limited edition 11x14 print produced in conjunction with Vault Galerie (Pilsen, Chicago).

Of everything I've made, this is the first time where I feel comfortable calling myself a producer. It's all original music except the vibes which are a replayed 'sample' of Bobby Caldwell's "My Flame." I was attempting to channel that 80s Sade sound where every song felt like a beach. Which is exactly where I wanted to be during week 1 of lockdown. And weeks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...

Early on, working with Armando & Ivan brought a sense of normalcy to the chaos. It began as a way to keep busy but quickly became something bigger than myself, or this remix. I hope that it brings you all a bit of that beach feeling, to the place we escaped to while creating it.
