The original "I'm A Lady" has some serious drums in the intro & break, so I wanted to extend both to see what would happen.  This edit was super simple, and turned out exactly how I wanted it to.  Enjoy.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, FRANK collaborator Jerry Nice is back with his latest mixtape KNEE DEEP 2.  Similar to part one of the series, there are plenty of classic slow jam moments, mixed in with creative blends & on-the-spot edits of his own.  Also, like the first mix, no artist is safe (i.e. Betty Wright into LoveRance?!? - Yup).

The difference with the sequel is the distinct themes throughout.  Not only does the late-great James Yancey lace his presence throughout (nod to Dilla month), but there are several re-edits of classic tunes that may take you by surprise - including his impromptu take on Taana Gardner’s classic “Heartbeat” midway through the mix. 

KNEE DEEP 2 is a perfect continuation of the series, and is sure to help keep your Valentine’s Day turned up after hours.

Jerry Nice & Proof - Straighten It Out (Mixtape)

On March 22nd 2016, hip-hop lost one of its most iconic voices when Malik Taylor (better known as Phife Dawg aka The Five Foot Assassin) passed away following a 25 year battle with diabetes. The mark he left on the music industry is well documented, most notably for being a founding member of A Tribe Called Quest, one of the greatest & most consistent rap groups of all time. 

This mixtape from Jerry Nice entitled "Live & Direct – A Phife Dawg Tribute" pays homage not only to his work within the group, but also several solo tracks & guest features throughout his career.

This one's been on my plate for a minute, and I finally gave it the time & energy needed to finish.  I wanted to pay homage to the beginning of hip-hop, with a solid blend of disco & disco rap, as told through the radio of that time.  All original LP's & 12"s were used for this - I hope you enjoy!

Straighten It Out turns 5!

The very first STRAIGHTEN IT OUT (SIO for short) was in the Fall of 2013 at Madrone Art Bar in Lower Haight, San Francisco. For the next 5 years and a ton of parties later, SIO has played all over the place, dropped mixes, and hosted some of the best DJ’s in the Bay, including DJ Cutso (The Bangerz/Rebel Pop Radio), Platurn (Oakland Faders), DJ Franchise (Generations Oakland), Cuffin SF (All Thangs R&B Party), DJ Ant One (Krazy Kidz Radio) and many more.

Founded by @djjerrynice who wanted to throw a good music party in The City that covered all genres of party music… He brought in @livinproof of Massive Selector as the first guest and the party was a hit! Proof stayed on board as a resident DJ with his signature brand of hip-hop, R&B, classics, and remixes to add to the mix.

It’s rare for a club night in San Francisco to last more than a couple years, so we’re celebrating this 5-year milestone with a complete rebrand designed by J.Boo of Family Affair Gallery, custom merch and this new mix.

In celebration of Record Store Day (the original date) and the fact that “Strictly Prohibited Vol. 1” has been slightly delayed, we’re putting out the companion mix in the meantime.  This has been years in the making and includes all Jamaican rap bootlegs on 7-inch, compiled and mixed by Jerry Nice.

“Strictly Prohibited Vol. 1” is a Jamaican rap 45 project, including a book release and other exclusive (and extremely limited) pieces.  Available this summer and designed by Jerry Nice & Justin Boo.

Jerry Nice is a DJ based in San Francisco & the greater Bay Area. 
 
While Hip-Hop & R&B are in heavy rotation during most of his sets, Jerry is constantly finding inspiration in all other genres of music as well (Funk, Soul, etc.).
 
With over a decade in the game, he has hosted several nights in the city, including The Groove Merchant Party, Track the Movement & The Get Low.  He currently holds down second Saturdays at Madrone Art Bar with co-hosts DJ PROOF and ANT-ONE for Straighten It Out.
