I wanted the EQ play to stop after this track came in though. The tease was done, I just wanted the payoff without it cutting out so I can really just settle into the track

I feel like the EQ work is just distracting me now. BUT! This is a Cringe Mix. And also, even in your *not* cringe mixes, playing around, fucking around is how you're going to get great at this. Inspired by your sense of play here :)

Live from The Get Down's 11 Year Anniversary // 3.21.24

For this week's assignment of playing for someone live, I threw a Saturday morning sun-filled basement house party for my wife. Oh and our puppets also attended (a shark and a snail). This set was intentionally crafted for her, who expressed her preference for tracks with lyrics, which serve as an anchor for her attention, staving off dissociative tendencies. With this constraint, I also borrowed from some of her artist requests, and made it an optimistic, poppy, upbeat flavor. 

I struggled with beat matching in some places because of the slight delay between the headphones and the speakers, which overpowered my headphones at times. I also had a few vocal clashes. I need to be more descriptive with my cue points and make sure the beat grids are on point as a backup in case my aural cues are not clear. I realize how easily I'm overstimulated by the volume and how I have to concentrate extra hard on getting the next track in, which can take me out of engaging with the crowd.

The feedback? I was "enjoyably dominant" and "took us on quite an intense journey." She thought only the second track felt a bit out of place, and at the beginning she wanted me to be looking less at the tech and more at her, but that this changed as I relaxed. On the positive side she appreciated how it felt tailored (Taylored?) to her and that my understanding of her translated in the music I chose - she reports feeling "seen". It wasn't just a playlist of her favorite songs but rather a selection of music to draw her in.

The dancers have a pent-up desire built up over the week to get loose. They have had a nanna nap in the afternoon to rejuvenate themselves for a long night reaching early into Friday. Those who have come to be seen want the music to be fresh, hip and recent because their currency is being in the coolest places of the moment. For those who are missing something, they want that one track which will make it worthwhile, that will speak to them so personally that it will forever alter their trajectory. This is the peak set of the week for the most committed. 

Over the course I want the dancer types to have anchored the movement on the dance floor, drawing the more reluctant types in the fold by the time more well-known tracks are being played. By the end I want people to be thoroughly rinsed out, then filled up again with the promise of new possibilities. The peak should be arriving around midnight, the balance point between darkness and light. I want to push their edges a bit, bringing in some higher BPM drum and bass flavors, with well known tracks (for the sparkle ponies) as fresh remixes (for the aficionados). When they finish, I want people to have felt like they just got away with something naughty.
