Justin Thomas - Amapiano Mix - July 2023 - Local Underground RDG

This is a mix I managed to extract from one remaining copy of a cd I still had. This CD was in pretty rough shape, and the process to get it onto this soundcloud page was more taxing then I realized it was going to be. In the end, my will to preserve the mix proved greater than the obstacles to doing so, so here it is.  The first track on the mix is plagued by some staticy-ticks that lose intensity as we get into the first breakdown of that first track. If you can bear with that, its ok from there.

If you asked me then who "influenced this mix," I would have dropped some pretty predictable Global Underground names. But, the truth is, my biggest influences were those closest to me. Damian, Rojas, Dao, Omar, Peter, the Whites , Josh, Bob, Arthur, Hypatia, Bryon, Chris...all these local djs who watered our local Reading soil over the last 20 plus years. I have enjoyed the journey immensely...here is a mix from the beginning.

This was put together sometime in 2000 on two tech 12's and a Pioneer DJM500.

Welcome to the second installment of the Local Underground RDG Series which aims to spotlight underground dance mixes from Reading, Pennsylvania. Here is a nostalgic slice of 2000-2001 house, tech house, progressive, and tribal vibes. This mix features classic cuts from Peace Division, Sharem Jey, and, of course, some killer tracks from Hooj Choons. This mix was put together on two Technics 1200s and a Pioneer DJM 500 on Walnut St by City Park where the Digital Movement crew then resided.

DJ Rojas brings us our next mix in the Local Underground RDG series. This series hopes to spotlight underground dance mixes from Reading, Pennsylvania. Our third installment features a breakbeat mix that is at once haunting, blistering, and beautiful. This nostalgic journey provides a wonderful sample of the rich progressive breaks from the early 2000's. Dave's selections tastefully present an iconic sound on this classic mix. Welcome to the fourth installment of Local Underground - RDG. In this edition, RDG takes a vacation to sun-soaked Florida where we find this soulful breaks mix from '99. 

Originally titled, "Soul Candy '99,"  DJSurcotti offers a Florida/progressive breaks mix that bumps from front to back. This Orlando based dj was born and raised in Reading, PA before departing for Florida in the late 90's. However, the DJSurcotti sound was omnipresent for us back in those days. I would return home from visiting Orlando with several cassette tapes worth of DJSurcotti mixes. These tapes, always mixed with precision, were our lifeblood then. I remember asking Damian to "make me one more mix before I leave," and he often would. We treasured these early mixes, and wore the heck out of those tapes...we bandaged them up on more than one occasion. 

So, here is a toast to DJSurcotti, Orlando Resident, and friend of Reading, PA. We appreciate the inspiration you provided through all of your dj mixes.

Welcome to Local Underground RDG 4 featuring an early mix from Hypatia. This mix wastes no time in getting right to it. Hypatia is all business on this one. A firing track selection and keen mixing fuel this deep and driving journey through some wicked, wicked tunes. If you like it dark and all things ominous, this is itttt. And I love it. The transition into Permanent State is one of my favorites on this mix.  By track four one begins to realize..."damn, we're deeep in it, and it's only track four." And then, it's just no prisoners from then on out. This mix is serious.

And this is no surprise. Hypatia is a true musician, and her youthful artistry is on full display here. She has always mixed with precision and an artful ear for programming.  What a gift we have to hear this early mix here preserved. Twenty-odd  years after this was recorded, Hypatia's musical journey has brought her to Pembroke records and her own productions. But it is here that we can see the early roots of that blossom through these records. So, at long last, enjoy this mix from our friend Hypatia.

In this edition of Local Underground RDG, we feature this super-clean mix from Joshua Ian, who makes 2005 sound like the future. Each one of these tracks still slams, and Josh has woven them seamlessly here. Breakbeats bubbling into four on the floor basslines make this an exciting journey, and all 12 of these tracks contribute something special to it.  This mix merges well many genres, blending the lines between them, asking us to just call it great dance music. Joshua Ian - Local Underground RDG - 5

In this edition of Local Underground RDG we are pleased to offer a classic mix from JP. This set was mixed live in 2000 on a set of Technics SL-1200MK2s during John's first semester of art school in Pittsburgh. This mix features a creative intro, followed by some wicked breakbeats that lead into  Mara's One, a Sleepfreaks mix, and a brutally tribal track from Xzique, before landing in the sweet sounds of 2000 era Sarah McLachlan, a key staple in any respectable record crate from that time period. From there, JP takes us on a journey through a host of deep and driving breakbeats and progressive house. What comes as no surprise to anyone who has heard JP mix is the fact that this mix is clean and crisp, with beats that stay locked for days. This guy can mix four records simultaneously for 10 minutes, without a slip, I really believe it.  On top of that, John can always be counted on to provide a sophisticated track selection, and an artful program. Thank you John for your  fine ear and keen mixing.
