Lowtempo Grooves Vol. II

I would describe myself as a music enthusiast first and a DJ second. I've been interested in music from a very early age. Growing up in the 70's and 80's had a profound influence on my tastes. My father was a huge Stevie Wonder fan and had an extensive record collection packed with Soul, Disco, Funk, Jazz and Blues. As with most, my early musical interests mirrored my parents. 
I broke away and went in my own direction from about 10 upwards after seeing a BBC news report on early b-boy culture in around summer 1983. I was hooked and that Christmas my parents bought me a couple of the Streetsounds Electro series of LP's and a roll of Vinyl! For about the next 6 years I spent most of my weekends down at either Stockport precinct or Market Street in Manchester trying to get time on the vinyl next to my heroes in the Broken Glass crew. The rest of the time I was in Spin Inn Disc centre purchasing whatever I heard on the Stu Allen's Bus' Dis' radio show on Piccadilly and later Key 103 and trying to get some of my Graff on the wall!
My Father used to regularly invade my room and comment on the records I was listening to, telling me the origins of the samples and loops. This pulled me headlong back into the world of Soul, Funk etc and I became obsessed with discovering the original sounds used by the artists I was listening to (Jungle Brother’s, De La Soul, Jazzy Jeff to name a few). In the Late 80's my sister, who was old enough to go to clubs, introduced me to early house music imported from Chicago. I didn't like it at first; however when I was old enough to go out to clubs myself I learned to love it. The Nineties and subsequent Nougthies have widened my taste to encompass more Modern Soul, R&B, Soulful house, Nu-Disco amongst other, but my roots are firmly planted in the sounds of my youth.
I have been aware of the art of DJing since the 80’s. Friends of mine from my hip hop days were in to turntabilism and I was always fascinated by the ability to blend records as was being done on the Streetsounds Electro albums I collected. However it wasn’t until the year 2002 that I decided to buy some kit and give it a go. I had always been concerned that a lack of ability to mix and scratch meant you couldn’t be a DJ, however whilst frequenting the popular Funkademia nights on Manchester’s Oxford road that I realised that it could still be just about music selection as opposed to just tricks and drawn out mixes and mash ups.
I threw some self organised 70’s/80’s funk, soul and disco nights in my locality and was at first content to just fade in and fade out tracks, convincing myself that mixing wasn’t possible with classic tracks from this era. However after securing a resident night at Hazel Grove’s fantastic Zuri bar, I met a guy called Jay Burke (he is on here as Jaysoul) he proved to me that, whilst difficult, it was entirely possible to mix and so I embarked on a new journey to learn how. 
I would say now that I am not the most technically proficient but I get by and enjoy what I do. When I play out as well as the music I personally like, I have to play what the people want to here as the night progresses, which is fine. However, at home in the confides of my bedroom, putting together a mix is a purely self indulgent pleasure. If other people like what I do then that’s a bonus. On here you’ll find music I like blended in a way that I want to here.
