'Confined Space' is an ode to Robert Johnson, a club in Frankfurt where I had an awe-inspiring night in June 2009. I followed a friend and a colleague into this mostly unmarked, very dark, and tiny place with no idea what I was getting myself into. 

I had never really had any exposure to the kind of music I heard that night - almost all minimal, deep, small-room electronic stuff that transfixed everyone in there for hours. I have no idea who played that night. All I remember was that I could barely see 2 feet in front of me, the place had practically no bar menu, the music was incredible, and I totally lost track of time.

When we left, the sun had already come up and a handful of people were starting their morning with some casual tennis a couple of stories below us on the banks of the Main river. I was like... "What just happened to me and where the heck am I!?"

This mix definitely doesn't do that experience full justice, but its essence transports me back to Robert Johnson 13+ years ago. I hope you enjoy it.

“For me, deejaying is curation, first and foremost. Designing a path along an arc of ideas and feelings through sound is what it’s all about. I believe the best DJs are experience leaders that guide you through feeling something you wouldn't feel in any other place at any other time. That's how I strive to be every time I DJ.

I’ve been curating music since I was maybe 8 years old, and deejaying since I was 18. I like to curate in the realms of house, disco, funk, 70s/80s everything, techno, DnB, electronic various, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, indie whatchamacallits, 90s easy pop/rock and alternative, reggae, 50s/60s soul and oldies, classic rock, everything in between and the list goes on.

When I make mixes, I’m usually wrapping around an idea or an imagined environment. Inspiration can come from anywhere. Taking tracks and sounds and arranging them in a way that makes me feel a certain way or think about something is usually the goal. Sometimes it starts with a collection of music and the rest flows naturally, and sometimes it starts with the name and idea then flows the other direction. The name might give you a clue what it’s about for me, but I won’t always tell you straight away - your own set of connections and individual interpretation is important to me. I like the ambiguity.

When I play out, I think about the space and who I expect to be there, and why they’re there. And what’s going on in the world around us that we can join into. What would we all really benefit from hearing and feeling and doing right now? The connection and shared experience you get with in-person events can’t really be replicated in my view. Not yet, at least.

Being a DJ has been different things at different times for me. I like where it’s at right now, and I’m excited for where it might be for me in the future.”
