TaoFu is the newest additions to the Observatory’s residency and the freshest member of Atipik crew coming from Hanoi, Vietnam. With a big love for music and dreaming of being the one brings joys to the crowds, she starts to dive into the underground music scene making a strong impression on the audience from the start.
Inspired by 80s to 2000s’ groove, her style is a mixture of sensual tunes from House, Electro, Disco as well as dark and minimal - that will surely sweep you off your feet. An unpredictable sound experience for all music lovers.

This week is curated by Manchester-based DJ, music journalist and producer, leoleoleo, who after running parties in Sheffield he began DJing full time and has spent lockdown making techno.

In his words: “I don’t often get to listen to music just for pleasure on a Monday morning, but if I did, this is what I’d want. Aiding that fragile ease back into reality, turning up the comfort, familiarity and motivation dials, but always keeping things below a level 4 or 5.”

leoleoleo is a project by Manchester based DJ and producer, Leo Burrell. After a euphoric debut single in the spring of 2022 which saw support from Horse Meat Disco, Sasha and Bill Brewster, as well as DJ sets alongside Romare, Cody Currie and Crazy P, Leo returns with a more melancholic yet still optimistic, tropes EP, landing on November 25th, featuring collaborations with jazz pianist, Rupert Cox and ambient guitarist, John Diver.

The tropes EP continues the half-glass-full aesthetic of the agadir/parapet EP, with soaring pads, arpeggiators and synth leads taking center stage, all underpinned by consistently broken kicks – there's no 4-on-the-floor in sight here. It has a definite home-listening dynamic, but all the tracks explore modern dance-floor tropes, hence the title.

 The first and only single, red sun (out November 4th) was born out of a formative trip to Jordan in January 2020, with memories of crossing the sublime Wadi Rum desert in a jeep inspiring epic soundscapes, punctuated by a momentous breakbeat, pounding kicks and a funky yet machine-like bassline.

 Opening track, yuánfen ft. rupert cox  sees offcuts of jazz pianist, Rupert Cox’s forthcoming debut album sampled alongside an elusive ‘60s sample. More pads and analog goodness were added later by Rupert, with leoleoleo on arpeggiators, drums and arrangement. 

 Third track, esme ft. john diver is a collaboration with Glaswegian ambient guitarist, John Diver which was previewed back in April, leading to support from veteran, Bill Brewster as well as play-listing from EELF, Majestic Casual and Sasha, who added it to the burgeoning LUZoSCURA editorial.

 Acting title track, trope, was written in the first lockdown of 2020, with a doomsday sensibility pervading throughout. Inspired by Joy Orbison’s Slipping EP, this deceptively slow number chugs with a driving energy from more broken kicks before unfolding into a huge bass drop which concludes the EP.

The always-cultured Catch Recordings taps into fresh new sounds from label head NADSAT plus Hardacre, Annie Errez and Leoleoleo on the new Northern Lines EP. Between them, these new school UK tastemakers explore a forward-thinking mix of acid, techno, broken beat and minimal to make for another classy EP.
First up is Hardacre, who last appeared on this label as part of a VA release in 2021. His work exists at the intersection of myriad UK-centric sounds from breaks to rave to techno, all with a futuristic twist. He runs his own self-titled label and never compromises on sound. His 'Higher Level of Communication' is a punchy mix of sizzling acid lines and pristine breakbeats. It has raw old-school energy but also artful synth craft layering in real emotion. Then comes Nadsat aka Brett Osbourne, a producer known for his meticulous attention to detail and perfect sonic placement. He brings drama and drive to richly atmospheric and timeless tracks. His 'Crash 101' is an urgent cut that hurries you along on hunched but punchy kicks. Dusty drums are backlit by a meandering synth that brings a sense of mystery to this stripped-back bit of low-key techno excellence.
Leeds's Annie Errez is one of the UK's best-kept secrets - an accomplished DJ, Mint Club mainstay and regal at Europe's most clued-up clubs as well as a producer who draws on those experiences to cook club-ready dynamite for labels like Mosaic and Strobewax. She gets deep and gritty on the intriguing 'According to Daneeka.' It's a dusty, dubbed-out afterparty head twister with freaky synth sounds scattered about the mix over chugging drum funk. Last of all is Manchester-based Leoleoleo who brings a utopian view to ethereal club bangers and pensive but uplifting rollers that have so far had support from the likes of Sasha and Optimo. Here he lays down hefty kicks in broken but funky patterns and drops optimistic synth sequences over the top. As the energy builds, string flurries add an extra

rush of dopamine as you reach for the lasers on a strobe-lit dance floor. Northern Lines is another high-quality dose of heady electronic sound.
