Sunday Crunch #9 - Daniel Hauser - 15.12.2024

Did you know that the DJ never knows for sure, if their mix just worked out perfectly? With the headphone on the cue on one ear, they just can't experience the mix like the audience. Listening back to yesterday's recording I was astonished how well all the transitions turned out.  So clean, it's hard to tell when a song ends and where the new one begins.

Isn't the perfect transition between songs the kind that you don't even realize that the song has changed until you're already in the middle of it?  This has always been the aim in techno, right? It's also frequent in house and indie dance, but how difficult is it to achieve when mixing original songs from the '70s and '80s? Difficult as hell, I tell you.

Until recently it needed cheating with a music production software, but then live DJ technology enabled us to choose our songs for transitions in the same musical key. Still, making the transitions sound as natural as if the new song is a part of the old one takes quite a different approach to doing the mix than we used to do with techno and vinyl.

And honestly I don't know anyone else doing it the way I do. Maybe I'm just a freak to develop such a technique. Maybe only I appreciate to hear it that way. Or maybe it is like on other occasions in my life when I was doing something differently than anyone else: it turned out that I was simply ahead of time. Maybe the way this mixtape sounds is just how new generations of DJs will do all of their mixtapes ten years from now.
