I think it’s about time we have some fun. Introspective alone time has its (very important) place and benefits, but sometimes you want to share life’s experiences with the people you hold dear. These life happenings always need a soundtrack to go with it, and we’ve got just the medicine. A beautifully curated love from the likes of DJ Luv you… A soaring star in the Naarm landscape, a magician of sorts; One that’s particularly exceptional at pulling ‘the good’ out of thin air. 

A master of their own story arc, putting in nothing but hard work and devotion to the art of selection. A DJ mainstay across the board, playing all types of ear sweeteners, their ability to adapt to any dance floor (and now any living room) is unparalleled, nailing the holy trinity of Naarm soundscapes ~club~radio~wine-bar. If you haven’t caught them yet at any of the aforementioned venues then put it on the top of your list, or listen to their countless, incredible mixes online (link below) 

If I haven’t convinced you yet of the sheer talent that they possess, this mix will do the talking for me. A serendipitous spin across time and continents whilst never missing a beat. The fact that this whole thing is mixed (perfectly) still blows my mind, even after 17 listens. I can only imagine the time and mind mapping the mix would’ve taken, but well worth every tedious second. Such an eclectic selection of tracks all with a thread of rhythm gently woven through them. So much future nostalgia compressed into an impressive 3 hour sojourn. A perfect accompaniment for a dinner party with friends evolving into dancing in the garden, all you need to do is figure out who’s hosting. Go forth, press play, have fun.

DJ Luv You (Ophelia Bakowski) is a non-binary DJ and multidisciplinary visual artist. Rotating between light and joyful rare groove to HI-NRG playful club selections, Ophelia is known for combining the influences of disco and contemporary dance music in fluid dynamic effect.

As a resident host on local radio stations Skylab, Hope St and Paris based LYL, Ophelia is a heavily engaged member of the local scene; Using their platforms and opportunities to always highlight the productions of womxn, queer and non-binary folk. In early 2020, this lead them to founding the queer/femme lead Naarm party LUNA Blessings, which focuses on booking artists from womxn, queer and GNC communities to curate safe and inclusive dance experiences.

Having performed at a frenzied frequency of late building their reputation as a notable selector in the Naarm scene, DJ Luv You will be bringing All Kinds Of Joy through the summer with appearance at the likes of Strawberry Fields, Lucid Danceclub, Melbourne Music Week and 2 Degrees Festival.

What makes a DJ Luv You gig special is their infectious enthusiasm and energy behind the decks. You can tell they’d just as quickly be amongst the dancers in the front left as up on stage with a beaming smile on their face.

Love is the message in the latest episode from local legend @djluvyou! Playing like a personal ode to the dancefloor, the mix is overflowing with heavenly deep house classics and hints of early 90s prog and trance to get you feeling all the feels and ready to sweat! 

Some words on the mix with DJ Luv You:

Q. I noticed that you included a bunch of songs with lyrics about love throughout the mix which I’m guessing was no accident! Tell us a bit more about the theme you had in mind here, and what kind of feelings you were hoping to evoke?

A. I’ve always been attracted to the more joyful side of dance music and I think it just kinda happened in digging for records, as one does looking for a certain aesthetic of a label sticker or a particular artist. For me, the word ‘love’ just always seems catch my attention. I wanted to focus on that energy for this mix, something quite emotional and nostalgic while still maintaining that movement and euphoria about it that you just can’t help but move to!"

Q. What other inspiration did you draw upon when putting the mix together? Is there a particular sound, time period in dance music history or a memory of yours that connects all the different elements in one way or another? 

A. I wanted to create a bit of an origin story for myself. This 90s era of sound has really become an obsession and identity, it feels like the perfect link for me between the two other worlds of dance music that I love; The rare groove housey side and the new wave proggy electronic and trance influenced sound. You’ll find hints of both here in this mix.

I also just wanted to put as many of my favourite records into this mix for my own listening pleasure. When you're doing something for yourself first and foremost there’s a pureness to the way things flow together. This recording was just one of those improvised moments using a really lovely Condesa mixer and enjoying myself fully.

Q. Are there any records in the mix that are particularly close to your heart, and if so what’s the story behind them?

I feel like I rarely play a set without this record making an appearance haha, "When You Love Someone" by Daphne. Its versatility seems to fit any mood or space for me. Allowing me to move from disco into something more contemporary or as an emotive breath towards the end of a hot and heavy electronicy set.

Q. And finally, I see you’re on your way over to Europe at the end of the month. What do you have coming up over there that you’d like to tell us about?

A. Yes, super excited to be heading over till October for my first international tour, opening up with Kala Festival in Albania. Then a run of club shows and more summer festivals across France, Germany, Netherlands, UK and Bulgaria. Looking forward to skipping winter and enjoying the sun with what feels like every other naarm dj ;)

With this project, artist Ophelia Bakowski explores, through a selection of compositions, field recordings, and live instrumentation, what it might be like to be a mushroom. Sounds collected and arranged for this work have been gathered in the process of foraging, consuming, exuding, and becoming. Tender has been a space to nourish and develop these ideas further over the Autumn months and now, as the season is here, it’s time to imprint our spores 💓
