NYC based bass enthusiast Jubilee gets peak-time freaky with the anthemic “B.D.F.Q” as featured in her recent BBC Essential Mix, talented upstart producer Malik Hendricks delivers a sublimely deep take on “Feel Like Dancing”, while Razor-N-Tape label boss JKriv turns in a bright and bouncy house version of “Our Hearts Didn’t Go That Way”. Funk stalwarts FSQ get groovy for a very different reading of “B.D.FQ”, and Damien Harris takes the sultry “Feel Like Dancin” into slow-rolling new disco territory.

@ambient-babestation returns to @optimo-music with a second collaborative release, this time with Bristol's sound-obsessive @borai. Their three-track EP, titled 'Human Material', collides electro, UKG and techno with early ‘90s hardcore.

'Do Androids Dream of Key Lime Pie' is a nod to the unabashed glory days of ‘90s hardcore and frantic sampling. Dubbed-out low ends make way for dusty jungle breaks.

London outfit Kassian continue their broadly-evolving yet highly detailed journey through and beyond sound towards something ever more expansive. Their second release for !K7 Records comes in the wake of creating a dedicated hardware-forward studio in a Northeast London container complex, where they have the freedom to interlink their machines. This renewed focus brought them to Supercontinent EP, named for the ancient geological era when Africa and South America were joined as Pangea.

A reformulation of rhythmic ideas inspired by South African Amapiano and South American Baile Funk governs the two hemispheres of the record. The pair examine and deconstruct dancefloor material, eschewing 4/4 for interlocking shaker patterns, searing acid lines, cracking breakbeats, and vocal samples in Zulu and Brazil Portuguese.

The immediacy of the restless rhythm and bass-led funk of “Yena” forms a sweet spot where double-time and half-time can coexist. The word Yena translates to ‘he / him / man’, and the punchy male vocal loop punctuates the track’s deep swing, enhanced by amapiano log drums sped-up to a glassy pitch.

“Yami” (‘mine’ in Zulu) is a slinkier proposition which sheds prominent percussion in favour of a weighty, fluid, acid-informed bassline undulating from below. Contrasted against its jutting female vocals and sharp synth pads, the track cultivates dancefloor anticipation, accented by skittering percussion and time-stretched acid disintegration.

An ascending percussive riff marks the arrival of “Pulgueiro Baile”, followed closely by break beats and the nostalgia of distinctly British acid electro. While pulguero translates as ‘flea market’ there is nothing random to be found; it is an intentionally future-forward retelling of a vintage sound, replete with a mind-melt breakdown of rave pads.

A dubbed-out groove dominates the bottom-heavy “Sistema Baile”, established by a leading Roland System 1 synth line. It is a groovy, steady roller that chugs and propels and chugs with head-nod hypnotism through an intricately minimalistic approach.

‘Congratulations’ is the debut EP from @rajirags on his OTIH Records label. A culmination of his influences merged together, the EP spans breakneck percussive rhythms across five tracks.

‘Bullet Train’ featuring @soniacalico is full of sharp corners and hi-hats that hiss, a breakdown that distorts bowed double bass beyond recognition, and stuttering note echos from Koto synths before returning back to the driving and shuffling Taiko and Darbuka drums.

Iain Taylor’s rEJEKTS imprint hit 16 releases in August with ‘The Mescal’ EP, and to celebrate, the Manchester selector has turned in an exclusive mix for DJ Mag, which you can listen to below.

Taylor cut his teeth at clubs like The Hacienda and The Music Box in Manchester, before a 7-year stint at Tribal Sessions at Sankeys. He then went on to hold residencies at Back To Basics, The Zoo Project and Space in Ibiza, as well as being a regular at Chibuku Shake Shake, Fabric and Stealth.

In 2007 he started the production alias of rEJEKTS, and in the same year set up an imprint of the same name. He also saw his music released on labels including Dirtybird, Ohm, Maintain Replay, Peep Show and Wilde.

The mix features several tracks from his label, including material from Jammhot and Curses, as well as Taylor under his rEJEKT moniker.
