As a prelude to the upcoming Soul:ution Room Two takeover on Friday 16th May, label boss Marcus Intalex and one of Manchester’s most reliable renegade emcees, DRS, have bumped consciousness and put together this, their ‘Mid Mic Crisis’ mix. Regular sparring partners in clubs the world over, DRS’ trademark measured Mancuian flow rides perfectly atop on Intalex’s soulful selection with his baritone delivery sitting sweetly and filling out the dynamic range of the rolling selections which reportedly feature, in some form, material from DRS’ forthcoming second album, Mid Mic Crisis.

Basically it’s a glorious and specifically tailored 62 minute mixtape showcase of DRS’ potency as a host, an emcee and a vocalist. But it comes mixed by Intalex which more than hints at the level of quality it contains... two of Manchester's finest in sterling form.

Last month, with Goldie's guest curatorship of Resident Advisor, we focused on the history of one of the most important music genres and scenes to come out of the UK: drum & bass. With this RA Podcast from Kasra, we switch over to the style's cutting edge. He's probably best known for his long-running Critical Music label, whose name is instructive. You'll find some of the most essential, crucial drum & bass of the last two decades through its 20-plus year-old back catalogue.

As a DJ and producer, Kasra embodies everything great about Critical and its approach: drum & bass with flair and personality, forward-thinking while staying true to the roots of the sound. The kind of music he plays is wide-ranging, but it usually leans towards the tight and minimalist. The basslines stop and start like stuck engines, drums hit with the mechanical precision of a Swiss-made watch, the MCs move with a tactical flow. Kasra's RA Podcast is a blend of new and old cuts from the likes of Skeptical, Halogenix, Break and the boundary-breaking Ivy Lab, plus a few cuts from the man himself.

**Was in the front row for this and it was one of the greatest sets I have ever heard Biggup DRS for the birthday shout on Supergrass @ 33.10 :) **

Recorded live at XOYO 16th August 2019 as part of Calibre's DJ residency there. This was a great opportunity for me to dust off the old dubplates and play some classic liquid sounds from around the early 00's era. Weirdly, a few hours before my set the barman at the hotel bar spilt boiling hot water on my left hand which meant I had to dj mostly one handed for this set, not so easy with vinyl! Still, the crowd brought the vibes and got me through it so it was a really memorable gig.

Fabio & Grooverider - RTRN II Jungle Pirate Radio Mix

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
