For the past few years, Waajeed has been developing The Underground Music Academy with UR's Mike Banks and others, with the aim of elevating a new generation of artists. In conversation with Tajh Morris, he talks about how about how local hero Amp Fiddler helped inspire the project.

From the nineties for a couple of decades I spend a lot of time collecting and playing contemporary Roots Reggae 7"s coming out of Jamaica. Here is a collection of mixtapes done over a 20 year period, chronicling the tunes I was buying and DJing both in San Francisco, at the European techno festivals I drove to in my bus and in Lothe UK during the heyday of London squat parties & warehouse parties. Although House Music was and is my first love I was still totally dedicated to Jamaican sounds from the 1970's onwards. Despite the poisonous homophobic bullshit coming from artists like Sizzla & Capleton, two insanely talented musicians, I felt almost involuntarily compelled to buy and play their music.....at the time alongside crews like Bootylicious and other black gay clubs in London, there was a kind of punk reclamation of Jamaican homophobia that happened where the act of queer DJ's playing anti-gay music was somehow an act of empowermen...a kind of fuck-you to those narrow-minded, bigoted haters. Although that moment has passed and I would think twice about playing anything like that again, these mixtapes do contain a few instances of that. I am not trying to edit my past...this was what happened in London during that time. Hope you enjoy. (PS volumes 1 and 13 and 14 are lost in the mists of time.)

A specialist through and through, he’s stayed true to the sound throughout its evolution, pushing the original minimalist style that’s now seeing a resurgence in interest.

But the versatile New York-based producer and DJ fights oversimplified categorisations and pigeonholing at every turn, extracting as much influence from obscure ‘90s rave records as much as Persian mythology

Solid Steel (9th November) This week we welcome Manchester native Ruf Dug to Solid Steel, owner of the appointment-only record store Hi Tackle and label-boss of Ruf Kutz. His releases have also appeared on labels like Unknown To The Unknown, Music For Dreams, Klasse Wrecks and Tusk Wax. With music from Omar-S, Martini Bros, DJ Duke and John Tejada in his mix, he told us;
"I recorded this mix at my studio on a Tuesday morning - it’s 100% vinyl for no other reason than I couldn’t get into the room with the CDJs in it (must improve biometric hacking techniques). I figured well fuck it then I’ll just play out of my bag like it’s a gig.
My record bag is a continual work in progress; I very rarely empty it out and start over so it’s constantly evolving - some things haven’t left literally for years. I just did a reasonably large refresh after the festivals so it’s a little newer to me than normal.
The mix was gonna be longer but the Glowing Palms tune ended sooner than I expected and it seemed like a good point to stop; sometimes u gotta let fate make the big decisions.
