Imitation can be the sincerest form of flattery. That’s how we felt initially when Michel Baumann ― a.k.a. Soulphiction ― used our sample from a demo we sent him over a year ago, but when he rereleased his own version under his name we were shocked to say the least. 

A part of the beauty involved with sample-based music is re-contextualizing sounds to make a new statement, and in that vein, juxtaposition and contrast make a mysterious or solid sample that much more meaningful, especially when it’s the first time used by a producer. Like a virgin, we never forget our first time, and Michel took that away from us by fucking us.

When it comes to Discrete’s internationally supported house classic ‘Mind And Body’, we maintain the position that timeless art speaks for itself and that bad things happen to bad people.

In a similar incident between Gene Siewing and another producer *cough, cough* Crom, Gene reminds us that “Your worst enemy is your best teacher”, and it’s from this experience we’ve learned to never do business with people with ulterior motives.

The rest of the EP, however less controversial, is grade A quality production you can trust from your favourite DJ, Discrete. Rare-groovin’ samples and Disco allusions throughout ‘To Keep You’ could probably crack a smile on the most cynical of DJ’s expressions, and maybe even help get them lucky, if you know what we mean.

There’s a buzz in the air when it comes to ‘Our Love’, or at least that’s how we feel when it’s playing at a party and our dancing friends dilated pupils connect with our own. Bouncy kick drums lift us up to that higher state of consciousness, where soft, soothing whispers only a woman can pronounce reminds us how love is meant to be shared.

To finish off the EP, Discrete blesses us with a more experimental outro. The mere two samples weaving in and out bring us back to the idea of how new meaning can be introduced by simple contrast.

This is one of many early  80's "Garage Band" tracks from Chicago.  While most of the U.S.  had Hip Hop - Treacherous 3 Funky 4 +One, Cassanova Rud and Cold Crush Bros., all we had was Grandmaster Flash. They played almost "0" hip hop, but groups like Magnum Force, Superior Movement, and these sounds from Marin Dumas, could be heard via cassette, odd hours on the radio, or at "sets", or basement parties. Not only is mike "father of the year", but he also has records. Deep crates, as they say. MIKE FEEL LOVE will keep the chin scratchers at bay for a while, seeing as the original cover has zero internet presence. It will also keep the dancers happy. A scrappy little edit keeping the sloppy instrumentation in tact, because it's the best part of the song. Drums fall out of time, or drop out altogether. The synth arps fall out of synch which makes you wonder if that's an arpeggiator, or some maniac playing live. The other side is a very old edit Mike dusted off and is guaranteed to make the chin scratchers take a bathroom break- seeing as it is a top 40 hit from the 70s. Which doesn't mean it's not a burner.

Long-serving disco-house fusionist Hot Toddy (AKA Crazy P co-founder Chris Todd) is in a loved-up mood on this rather tasty three-tracker. Surprisingly, it's his first solo single for some five years, and his first for House of Disco. It's the breezy, funk-fuelled A-side "In The Genes", in which Todd expertly fuses together elements most often found in proto-house, NYC boogie, early house and disco-funk records, that stands out, though the standard naturally remains high elsewhere. "Love Music", for example, is a wonderfully sauced-eyed stroll through dreamy deep house/disco fusion, while closer "Love Can Set You Free" sits somewhere between stripped-back disco-house, percussive boogie and Idjut Boys style dub disco.
