Having released on labels such as MisterSaturdayNights, HausOfAltr, 3024, World Building, and Incienso, James Bangura has become a name we’ve heard consistently in dance music over the last few years.  Being One of the co-founders of the group “Black Rave Culture” and also having a slew of independent releases dating back as far as 2012, James Bangura has maintained a steady pace for the last decade. James’s DJ ability is also something not to scoff at with an archive of various mixes that showcase James’s playful sensibility whilst maintaining a high level of tension and energy that keeps his audience wanting more. We can’t wait to see what the next decade has in store for this unique artist.

My edit of they are gutting a body of water's 'ES beautyhand'. Obscure Post-Rock electronic interlude meets playful Techno Dancehall-esque vibes.

The original has the iPhone message notification sound in it so I played into this aesthetic. Shout out to my MSN kids.

Finishing off Henzo’s banner 2022 that has seen releases on YCO and Peder Mannerfelt Produktion, the Manchester based producer dials back the tempo into 5 cuts of gloom-ridden dancefloor damagers for his Nervous Horizon debut. Running the gamut of Dancehall, Techno and Drum & Bass, the EP’s refined palette is laser-guided in its intention of favouring groove and atmosphere over melody and hooks.

The opening track, 'Survivorship Bias', rolls out a lurching and smudged drum break over an equally sketchy Donk and vocal sample in a Bolton-meets-Belgium chug affair. 'It’s Ours and Hours Alone' and 'Writhing' lean more towards a typical Dancehall rhythm, smattered with the reticulated percussion that Nervous Horizon have been known for, saturated and growling. 'His Troublesome Knees' sees a variation on the theme of the opener, with the addition of harrowing, gnarly strings that posit drama in the riff that runs almost throughout; An inescapable tension that juxtaposes the highly danceable groove. Rounding out Stretford Blues, 'A Pocket You Didn’t Expect' feels like 3 tempos at once: 82, 164 and 328BPM. The battering, unrelenting kicks laced over taut breaks and hats hark to Jungle Techno and Tech Step in their composition, but the drawn out and bleak orchestral breakdown, coupled with a barking, irate bassline, suggest that Henzo shows no allegiance to nostalgia and is moving intently into the future.

Before we dive into new Ruffhouse joints, we’d first like to point out that this EP is dedicated to Tommi, the guy who always had positive energy. We will remember his outstanding personality forever.

After a short hiatus due to these uncertain times, Ruffhouse Industries is back on track to deliver the much anticipated debut EP „Energia“ by Helsinki’s club music stalwart Koala. 

Linked up with Ruffhouse in 2014 through Desto’s Signal Life Radio show, he became a mainstay of Munich’s notorious Club music collective on account of his presence on every Rufftrax compilation up to date. 

„Energia“ is all about the dancefloor, although it kicks off with a rather mellow – in relation to the common Ruffhouse standards – track entitled „Laisser“, driven by swinging percussion and an eerie synth reminiscing of a Sci-Fi scenario from outer space.

On „I Came To Steal Your Dancers“, Koala’s intentions of shelling the dancefloor come to light as the track kickstarts into an obviously UK-Funky inspired Club banger equipped with hard hitting vocal chops, drum rolls and a bone rattling low end bassline.

The following title track of the EP represents the essence of Koala’s predilection for marching drums, growling sound effects and clanking percussions. Needless to say that „Energia“ lives up to its name and provides a huge funky factor.

From what started with a massive Ruffhouse crew gathering in an unknown cabin, maybe somewhere in the Transylvanian woods, Koala took the sound files and distilled another veritable banger. “Cabin II” definitely 2 steps into Garage, once again bringing those distinguishing delay drum effects that we love so deeply.

Cakeshop resident and Ruffhouse member Mignon from Seoul put his hands on “Laisser”. His remix provides a subtler approach to the harmonics and percussion while having the vibe on lock.

In order to round up this EP Strict Face steps into the ring. He is pretty well known for his releases on NLV and Local Action. The Aussie redefined “Energia”, and the artist’s name is exactly what you gonna make when you hear this track for the first time. Angry, noisy and distorted sounds are what he assigns to the original.
