@edavd is the project of multidisciplinary artist Emmanuel David Monteiro. A deep thinker, E Davd brings a theoretical and conceptual lens to his work - if you listen deeply and with intent, you can begin to understand some of the complex ideas that underscore his music. Process driven and creative, E Davd is not bound by genre, rather working with different patterns, rhythms and approaches to sound to explore his connection to, and barriers to ancestry and heritage. Starting out age nine on the congas, playing Cape Verdean and afro music in his dad’s band, E Davd now uses electronic music to explore his own ideas about black music. Now, he uses techno as a mechanism to explore complex themes such as the nexus of nature and technology, Indigenous technologies and afrofuturism. His radio show and soon to be record label ‘Visions of Utopia’ on Nomad Radio also encapsulate these themes, looking toward a utopian society that is not only equal and free from racial violence, but one in which blackness is privileged.  E Davd uses his guest mix on Passing Notes to present a deep excavation into the internet, himself and afrofuturism - expect a sound collage of original works - finished and ‘unfinished’, samples and snippets from afrofuturism documentary ‘The Last Angel of History’. I had a wonderful time talking with E Davd about afrofuturism, ancestry, blackness, black music and more.

DJ MBq aka Andy Wallace has been DJing professionally for over 20 years in bars and nightclubs throughout Australia. Over the years MBq’s sound has modulated with different venues and dancefloors. Anything from abstract lounge and balearic rhythms to percussive tribal and hedonistic disco workouts. Or deep jazzy leftfield and soulful house blended with modern uptempo electronic club music.

Early in his career Andy held residencies in seminal Brisbane venues Barsoma and Family Nightclub. It was here that Andy took guidance under Oz legend DJ Freestyle, honing the craft and training his ear towards the sound of underground house and disco. In 2006, he relocated to Melbourne and took residence at Room 680, performing to large crowds weekly. Here in Naarm is where DJ MBq has continued to work in venerated nightlife spaces such as Revolver Upstairs, Music Room, Section 8, Whitehart, Angel Music Bar, Howler, The Night Cat and New Guernica. In 2019, Andy founded the event outfit Jam Hot with longtime DJ colleagues Wahl and DJ Swella. Jam Hot quickly became a staple in the Melbourne music scene, hosting events with interstate and international DJS alike. Here, MBq was afforded supporting DJ spots for Toytonics (Cody Currie & Athlete Whippet), Marcel Vogel, JKriv, E.Lina, Gabriele Poso, DJ Spen and JNETT. 

In 2020, DJ MBq became the primary resident DJ at the now-revered hi-fi vinyl-only venue Rumbler Bar. An intimate space with an inimitable sound system located on the notorious Chapel Street precinct. It’s here that MBq regularly constructs extended three to six hour sets showcasing his unique programming style. Focusing on extreme juxtaposition of genre, emotion and time. Scintillating the dancefloor with upfront dance music and long forgotten hidden gems from his extensive collection of records acquired over a long career behind the mixer.
