Since 2009, Andrew Kelley has been involved in Wu Tang-affiliated projects as a producer and A&R. He's contributed to RZA's "The Man With the Iron Fists" soundtrack, compilation albums "Chamber Music" and "Legendary Weapons" and, most recently, Ghostface Killah's "Twelve Reasons To Die". 

Now, he has come together with longtime collaborator DJ Mekalek to bring listeners "Some Songs I Made for RZA", a DJBooth-exclusive street album compiling highlights from his work with the legendary East Coast crew, Wu-Tang Clan.

Back in 2006, I started getting into some disco records. It was a genre I always thought was a little too "light in the loafers" if you know what I mean.  To me, there was a lot of cool things going on with some of the songs, but it just wasn't tough enough for me.  That's when I came up with the idea to remix/re-edit some of the cooler tracks and make them feel more like hip-hop.Every beat was done on the ASR-10 keyboard, sampled directly from vinyl, and those who know the sequencer on that beast know how painful that must have been.  It was, but I was able to achieve a certain sound.
After all the beats were made in 2008, I fit them together into a non-stop mixtape format, using a Juno 106, Novation Bass Station, scratches, and drops to bridge everything together.
This was really my first extensive venture into 100+ bpm territory; I was pretty used to living in the 80 &amp; 90 bpm range at that point.

Mek's Party Mixx

Instrumental version of the song off Jahpan's, "An Album Called Life", LP.  Heavy RZA/Wu-Tang influence on this one.  Even though this is just a simple loop with some chops, I think this is my favorite beat off the album; it's just got that vibe I dig so much.  I always thought this would be a great open mic beat, but I don't do those very much anymore so it's on you DJ's to decide.  Check the vocal version to hear me rap (yikes).  Made entirely on the ASR-10, using that classic ASR filter.

Do The Rite Thing (Mekalekstrumental) - 2009

In 2007, Glow-in-the-Dark Records had a roster of ridiculously talented artists either signed to, or affiliated with the label.  The purpose of this mixtape was to showcase this talent with exclusives, singles, and album cuts from all these artists.  A lot of the material was done specifically for this mix, but some of it wound up on future Glow-in-the-Dark releases.  Artists included are: Time Machine, Panacea, The Project, Shawn Jackson, Jahpan, and even the legendary People Under the Stairs.  This was pre-Serato, so all trickery was done with a CDJ 800 and recorded on Pro Tools

Glow Like This: The Mixtape

This mixtape was a bonus disc, given away by Underground Hip-Hop Dot Com to those who bought my "Live and Learn" production album that came out in 2006.  It's an all-vinyl, two turntable mix of some of my favorite early-to-mid-90's hip-hop songs.  These are NOT your average, played out 90's tracks by any means, but if you knew the deal back then, you were probably rocking these amazing golden-era gems.  When drums were drums.

For My People Mixtape

"Moodswings" has over 60 beats in 21 minutes, all instrumentals from vinyl, blended together to form one long beat.  The idea is to have all the peaks and valleys that a person goes through in life, but using straight hip-hop instrumentals to express the ups and downs, falling into and out of zones, happiness and sadness, etc...  It's a journey devoid of weak drums, but don't let that scare you.  No pitch shifting was used in the making of this mix.  I submitted this for the Fab Five Mixtape, which includes submissions by other New England DJ's: Mr. Peter Parker, 7L, Fakts One, and CR.

Moodswings Pt. 2 (Medium Speed)

I did this megamixx to promote my own production album, called "Live and Learn", where I made all the beats, did all the scratches, and called in a bunch of my favorite rappers.  They, in turn, wrecked every beat I gave them.  This one was done on the CDJ-800, because Serato did not yet exist and I didn't have the vinyl yet.

The third installment in the "My Killer Tape" series, which dropped in summer 2003.  This is a mix of all new (at the time), mostly vinyl-only, indie hip-hop joints.  There's some great Dilla on here, just before people went gaga Dilla-crazy; add in People Under the Stairs, Masta Ace, Boot Camp, M.F. Doom, some great Rhode Island stuff as well, and way more.  I really like the format of this mixtape right here, with the exclusive verses woven throughout the mix and a couple of scratch breaks.  And as far as the Kanye song, it was on this tape at least 6 months before it even saw the light of day on commercial radio, so cut me some slack.  I broke that song in Rhode Island, and now look at 'Ye.  Almost all vinyl here, with a couple of cd's mixed in.  This was the first mix I recorded on a computer.

My Killer Tape, Pt. III

This was the first mixtape of mine sold in stores, and was really the first time anybody but myself or my friends seemed to give a sh*t about what I was doing as a DJ.  In 1999 when this came out, you had to be a heavyweight to get your mixtape sold in a record store; so when Heartless Jim from the legendary Skippy White's asked for some copies to sell, I couldn't even believe it.  When I saw my tape on the shelves with all my favorite local and national DJ's, it really changed everything for me.  This mix is mostly live, and has a lot of pretty raw indie joints on it.  This is the first time I worked with Romen Rok of the Funkbunker Fleet, who does the intro, and my boy Andrew Unknown made this epic cover for me.  Tools used:  2 turntables, a mixer, records, and a digital 8-track.  Tape-only release.

The Fingerprince (A-SIDE)

A lot of people tell me this is their favorite mixtape of all-time; and I'm humbled to hear something like that from people who I've never even met before.  To be fair, the reason this mixtape is so unique is largely due to my boy Andrew Unknown aka Andrew Kelley.  He had this crazy idea that we could get exclusive verses from people like Smif N Wessun, Sean Price, Rock, Masta Ace, Grafh, Wordsworth, J-Zone & Old Maid, Celph Titled, Rise, Punchline, Akrobatik, and more.  I thought he was out of his damn mind, but we made it happen.  To this day, I call Andrew's big dreaming "The Vision", and it was crazy to see it become a reality.  This mixtape is packed with classic early-to-mid-90's beats and murderous verses by some of me and Andrew's favorite rappers.  To be clear, all these verses were recorded specifically for this mixtape.  Our boy, Eli-173, was also instrumental (pun intended) in helping us make the ideas into a reality with his DAW knowledge and engineering skills.

Ain't No Love - DJ Andrew Unknown & DJ Mekalek

This is the first of the 2 CD series I did with my man Andrew Unknown.  When I was in Australia, people were telling me how gospel this CD was and how much better they liked it than the second one ("Ain't No Love").  I don't know about that, but this mixtape definitely captures the late-90's, indie hip-hop scene perfectly, and it's so much more unrefined and basement than the second one.  With exclusives from Percee P, Louis Logic, Apathy, J-Zone, Celph Titled, Non-Prophets, Punchline, All Natural, and even JUICE (!), and more, there's some crazy sh*t on here.  This is called "The Lost Freestyle Sessions" because we were using a digital 8-track (Platinum Ice!) and mini-discs for everything, and a bunch of stuff got lost at some point. 
So many stories from recording this mixtape.  I remember Andrew, me, and DJ Next driving back from Philly where we met up with Louis Logic to get his verse.  We were on Route 95 at like 5 AM Monday morning, it had been raining, and I was trying to study for an exam I had at 9 AM.  All of a sudden, Andrew's whip spun out of control, did a couple of 360's and stopped short right before we smacked into the highway barrier.  That sh*t happened in slow motion, and I was probably wondering whether a Louis Logic freestyle was worth dying for (no offense, Louis).

From the "Make Some Noise" 12", this is the first song that hip-hop legends Edo G & Masta Ace ever did together.  Intros and outros by Rhode Island legend DJ Curty Cut (R.I.P.) who was an incredible inspiration to me and so many others.  Beat and scratches by me using an ASR-10, vinyl, and turntables.
