The local theater was showing Purple Rain last weekend and I reached out to them to try and let me spin a set before the movie started.  I organized my songs just in case but alas I never got the OK.  So here's the set I prepped.  You'll note there's nothing from PR since I figured everyone was about to see the movie so they'd hear those tracks.

As ever with Prince tracks it ain't easy mixing.  He does't always give you a traditional 32 beat intro.  But whatevs. No excuses.  I did my best.  Enjoy

Count Basie Theater Mix

Here's a mix I put together featuring songs from the 90s  I opened up with arguably the most important song of the decade as it completely changed music as we knew it.  Overnight, Nirvana made all the glam rock bands look like poseurs and they ushered in an entire new genre and attitude. The mix out of this isn't great but it's hard to mix live drummers (not knocking Dave Grohl!)  After that I fall into a smooth (mostly) mix of some of my favorite club favorites from the decade.  The energy peaks just past the half hour mark then I end with some of the hip hops songs from the 90s.  

I squeezed 28 songs into this 45 minute mix by the way so if there's something you don't like, keep listening, it'll be over soon.

Mike's Haven't Stop Dancing Yet Mix

When an artist dies I'm often moved to make a mix inspired by their songs (which happened WAY too often this year).  This morning,  I started with some George Michael  then stuck with the 80s vibe throughout.

Two things:  By my count there are 11 bands or artists in this mix who passed away this year (when it's a band I mean a prominent member died).   And I don't mean 11 songs (because some artists I play more than one song from).  11 musicians.  Gone.  See if you can spot them all (what a morbid game!)

Also, I'm aware there is one song in this mix from the early 90s.  It very famously samples an 80s song and one of the key members of the band died this year so I thought it fit the theme.  

Here's hoping I'm not inspired to make a similar mix for a very long time!

I had the honor of DJing and MCing for Ed and Michelle. Their whole reception was a GREAT celebration. This is just the opening 25 minutes. I didn't even think their guests would start dancing right away but they did so I just went with it and kept mixing and feeding the fire and before long you couldn't move on the dance floor it was so packed. Like I said at the end of this, "THAT'S the way to start a celebration!"

I got to do a lot of mixing at Ed and Michelle's wedding.  Here's the first 50 minutes after dinner.  Just came out with some of their requests, dance floor filled and we went from there,  This crowd was awesome and they responded to everything!  I loved this wedding!

Emily And Dom Last Hour Set

Working with this couple was such a thrill.  Their entire wedding was off the chain.  Here's the last hour plus.  I'm coming out of The Cupid Shuffle and into Harlem Shake (which I haven't played forever)  Most of these choices were on Mark and Noelle's playlist BTW.  You'll hear me do a "no rain" chant at one point - the wedding was in their backyard and it was starting to drizzle a bit but Mother Nature heard us and held off.  It was a great night all around!

I found a Spotify playlist a while back of my favorite artist's favorite songs. It was a great education of some deep tracks that I'd mostly never heard.  I sat on it for a while, familiarizing myself with the songs and adding a few of my own that have a similar feel (including, of course, some of His.  Today I finally decided to put a mix together. About half of these songs are from that original list. The others are my own. Hope You-Know-Who would approve of my additions. 

I mixed the first 19 as best as I could. These songs don't always follow the 4 x 4 format we're used to and they all feature live drummers so it wasn't easy but I think I avoided any train wrecks. 

The last track is one from that original list. Breaks my heart to think of how it might have broken His heart.  Please don't take my sunshine away indeed.

He always used to say (in his concerts) that he was playing Real Music. This mix features nothing but that. Real Music by Real Artists.

I spun for a charity event Casino Night last night.  No dance floor and no dancing expecting.  But I remembered something Jon Taffer said at Mobile Beat a few years ago.  He said (and I'm paraphrasing) "there is no such thing as background music.  There is lower volume music but no background music."  I channeled that philosophy and strived for a fun, sing alongable set and it worked.  Got tons of compliments and gave away a few cards as well.  This is a classic rock heavy set which played to the mostly baby boomer crowd.
