We begin with Senegal of course with the Orchester Laye Thiam, born of a temporary schism within the Star Band of Ibra Kasse and led by the trumpeter of the same name, before his departure for Congo where he accompanied it seems James Brown in Kinshasa. Then it's the spellbinding Poly Rhythmo drummer Danialou Sagbohan for a maddening Afro-Cuban Latin track. His friend Gnonnas Pedro, the greatest singer in West Africa (with Ballaké), continues with his combination where the guitar replaces the piano of the descarga, the same goes for the next track, by Sam Mangwana, another golden voice that sang for both Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau, the two great rivals of Congolese music, for his only album recorded in Portuguese. A tribute to Mozambican emancipation, where he advocates a return to the land, on a heady rumba / soukouss. No wonder when you know that his mother was Angolan! The Portuguese-speaking pole takes us to Cape Verde via Senegal with Mendes, child of the Medina, popular suburb of Dakar, former member of the Cabo Verde Show combo, immensely popular here. We then take the big leap to Cameroon, with funky Bikutsi and Asiko frenzied where the bass is unleashed on tribal rhythms to die for. We conclude with a jump to Ghana, the vocal harmonies of Thomas Frimpong and the guitars of Eric Agyemang bewitch this highlife highclass.

Fifty-two years ago, the president of Senegal’s nephew was putting together a band for his new, upscale Dakar nightclub, and he recruited a handful of musicians who are still together today. Bringing together elements from their homes across West Africa to the Afro-Cuban style of the time, the Orchestra Baobab became one of Dakar’s top bands. From the rough recordings made in Club Baobab, to their 21st century revival, their music ranges from slow folk ballads to wah-pedal heavy psychedelia. We’ll talk to members Rudy Gomis, Barthelemy Attisso, Theirno Kouyate, Balla Sidibe and more, and hear selections from a truly one-of-a-kind group, the specialists in all styles, half-a-century old and still evolving: the mighty Orchestra Baobab. One of the go-to terms for anything “tropical” nowadays, Zouk is a music genre born in the late 70’s in the French Antillean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Zouk's first iteration was crafted by the band Kassav’ when bandleaders Desvarieux and Décimus longed for a local "Disco-type music”, thus proudly proposing their own homegrown brand of pop. Carved around the foundation of an infectious pattern carried by hi-hat cymbals, Zouk was created as a weapon to elevate the status of frowned-upon Antillean cultural practices. It was a powerful response to the musical and political domination of France and other regions of the Caribbean. Kassav' paved the way for the groundbreaking genre to become both culturally relevant and commercially viable beyond the Antilles, reaching a career high in 1985 with a global hit in which they cheekily claim that Zouk is "the only medicine they need".

Borrowing elements from the neighboring islands - such as Cadence-lypso from Dominica and Compas from Haiti - Zouk’s signature sound was also shaped by the tools from the burgeoning digital age, as musicians and producers embraced the MIDI technology with its promise of fun through loop-programming. Many of these eager pioneers jumped head in and didn't shy from manufacturing anvil-sounding snare drums, wacky vocal modulations, epic horns, saturated bass and sexy synths... all of it duly drenched in reverb!

Perceived right away by some stiff necks as low-brow entertainment inducing lewd motions of the hips, Zouk was actually the result of incredibly sophisticated recording technology and visionary talent. Although derided in the distant French “métropole” - with hits from bands such as “La Compagnie Créole” and “Zouk Machine” relegated to camping and carnival DJ playlists - Zouk invaded the African continent within a decade. The familiarity of Zouk’s underlying rhythm spoke to many through the deep and complex web of pre-slavery roots connecting Africa to the Caribbean.

Whereas most white French music snobs disregarded Zouk as a synonym for bad taste and cheesy regionalism - sometimes with the racist tinge of colonial contempt - African listeners loved it for what it was: a kick-ass beat to sweat to, especially while dancing close to a partner. Since the early 80’s, African musicians have been paying homage to the couple-friendly genre, quoting words from the creole lexicon (“Doudou”) and blending in their own territorial twists: be it in francophone (Makossa, Rumba, Soukous) or lusophone countries (Tarraxinha, Kizomba, Coladeira). A lot of Afro Zouk legends actually met, hung out and worked in recording studios and DJ booths of the cosmopolitan city of Paris, which has been acting as the cross-pollinating hub of French-speaking black diasporas since the 70's.

Paula Juana is joined by legendary Tobagonian musician Hawthorne Wellington Quashie aka King Wellington.
 
King Wellington, born on January 1st 1939, in Goodwood, Tobago, has been making music since the age of 11. Singing calypso at school and performing under the name Cisco Kid, he moves to Trinidad as a teenager with a guitar and a couple of friends to play music for tourists. He first recorded in the 1960s as The Cisco, then reinvents himself as King Wellington in the 70s. He moves to New York bringing calypso to international audiences performing in places like Central Park and Greenwich Village. When moving to Boston where he studies Harmony and Composition he starts experimenting with composing calypso songs with emphasis on the role of the drums in particular but also the bass, inserting blues cords, fusing American soul music and calling the new music "Russo Funk" or "Soulcalypso". This genre of music became Soca music.

In 1989, Congolese soukous had ignited dance floors across the continent, and in European cities, especially Paris. And now it was arriving in America. One of the most hard-working and polished of many Congolese groups was Loketo, headed by singer Aurlus Mabele and ace guitarist Diblo Dibala. Keen to document the moment, Afropop Worldwide recorded the band at SOB's in New York City, then the gateway for African groups seeking to tour in America. The presenter of that concert, Alex Boicel, recalls to this day how that SOB's show captured the magic of Loketo like no other. All these years later, the music still sounds as fresh as the day it was played!
