It is usually said that every reconstruction is preceded by an initial destruction, be it concrete or abstract, material or symbolic, natural or artificial. A predecent period or process that creates the essential conditions for something new not only to emerge, but to take hold despite everything, against all odds. And it is by following this creative dynamic that the restless mind of an artist like Data Assault not only operates but especially thrives.

Such a moniker may suggest something aggressive, but it only points to the violence that is an inherent part of the creative act, while also referencing the most elemental and ubiquitous component of our lives today. Here, a data assault is nothing more than the relationship of art to our senses in its purest state, whatever form may take. And both in his poignant visual oeuvre and in his potent musical work, it is this primal impulse that feeds the imagination of this Brasilia native.

After all, it expresses itself in a longeval career as an audiovisual chronicler of the human and inhuman aspects of his hometown, as an architect of the reclaiming of public spaces through mural interventions and as a producer of events that were part of a movement that injected energy into the capital's nightlife during the last decade. It was within the IMÃ collective and its Grau parties that he materialized his initial impetus in this area, in an impulse that was followed by many other initiatives and extended to the present day, passing through transformative projects such as SUB IN MUNDO as part of the collective SUJO or the SNM Sessions and Electro Resistance next to the SNM core to their own legendary Crying Club parties.

Which artists has influenced you the most?

- Afrika Bambaataa and all the hip hop culture, I grew up on B-boy battles and Graffitti lifestyle, but theres some local heros that influences me a lot like my man RHR, DJ Magal, DJ Jamaika (RIP) and all my friends. 

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- My upcoming 12"on Falling Apart, im very exited about it, its a label that I really love the ethos and the music. 

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- My label Nice & Deadly are doing a very good work releasing a lot of local artists from Brazil, theres not many electronic music labels here and we're doing an excelent job for the community and the scene. 
But theres some labels and artists from otherseas I  would like to mention too, I really love Dj Stingray, Helena Hauff. I-F, Viwlexx, Solar Music, and Klakson stuff. 

What inspires you now to create music?

- I really like philosophy and movies, to experiment new concepts and ideas coming from this UNIVERSES. 

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- Actually im not creating new music a long lime, because of covid I had to sold all my equipment and a lot of crazy shit happened in Brazil last year, our economy were broke. But when I was creating music I was using my Digitakt, shitty Waldorf bass synth, Shure sm-57, some boss guitar pedals and a soundcard to record it, thats all.

Strange But Dance Music #134: DATA ASSAULT

Opening @ Nowadays Nonstop 1/20

Berlin-based Katiusha is known for building hi-energy, intricate stories on the dancefloor. With a background in experimental radio and non-profit parties, her taste has always extended far and wide – but her club selections draw heavily on atmospheric rollers, leftfield techno, and UK impact. Flying from hardcore to jungle, techno to dubstep and some ambient nuances; fearlessly barrels through genres with the utmost care and precision - truly one of the tidiest DJs.

This sound has caught the attention of revered venues like FOLD, Tresor, and Berghain’s SÄULE. On air, she's played for Boiler Room, Rinse FM, and Moxie’s semanal NTS show and Festivals like Dimensions and Cosmic Roots. Last year she made a strong entrance onto the production scene with debuts on Peach Discs and Idle Hands: in 2024 she leaned into a more trippy bass sound, releasing on dubstep imprint SPLOT and, more recently, her own label GRACE. The label is a new project for hazy club sonics, with a DIY ethos and producer equity at its core.

Long story short, you can trust Katiusha to provide the best wubs and cosmic rollers, so you don't want to miss this percussive but surrounding mix.

Olgica began her artistic career in Serbia as a contemporary dancer and performer, also mastering Serbian folk dance. Now residing in Graz, Austria, she has channeled her deep-rooted dance expertise into aDJ practice. Her influence extends further through her work as a promoter of Interlude events, enriching the city's cultural fabric.

About the DJ:

Producer for ages, collecting records for the last few years, but very new to the DJ scene, despite hanging on to it in Montreal for a while. Finally built up the crates (and the courage) to start putting some of my ideas together for the floor.

About the mix:
I wanted this mix to sound very casual — like just hanging out in my room on a random evening. There are definitely a few heavy moments and more than a handful of mistakes — but overall I’m really pleased the outcome captured this sort of raw, flowing energy I always attempt to bring to sets. Of course in a mix designed for headphones the selection is always going to be different — drastically pivoting in the middle of mix from the more modern stuff all the way back to 80s house / boogie is another thing that works better here than it would on a floor. Like to think I pulled it off reasonably well in any case tho 😛 

Early house / late disco culture has actually become something of an obsession for me over the last little while. Listening to the work of early dub mixing masters — Walter Gibbons, Arthur Russell, Shep Pettiibone and later Paul Simpson, Winston Jones. They were able to do so so much with such little input and very primitive tools! Just magical because you can see the sprouts of the music we know and love budding within the opulence and excess of disco. It just took the right pair of ears to strip the sound back to what’s needed and bring the grooves to the surface.

On a more heavy note, looking back to this era has also helped me find some partial answers to the ever pressing question: is it okay to find solace on a dance floor in times like these?  Now more than ever, with the ongoing genocide in Palestine and Lebanon, the (continued) rise of fascism, our acceleration of the ongoing climate disaster —  the list goes on. It’s hard not to draw parallels to the atmosphere of the early/mid 80s —  the spectre of Vietnam still looming, the AIDS crisis in full swing, the failed war on drugs upending millions of lives. Amidst all this death and destruction the early pioneers of house and techno were able to build such a beautifully queer, forward thinking culture that provided community to many who desperately needed it during that time. 

It’s easy to write partying off as hedonistic escapism — and of course there’s a degree of selfishness involved — but to me it’s always been more than that. These healing spaces we create through music, communities based on acceptance and celebration of the weirdos and outcasts, I really believe have the power to bond people together like nothing else. Dancing, synchronization of movements on a primal level, often hypothesized to be valued by early humans for its ability to meld individuals into one unit, still has this magical, transformative power. Magic feels so rare in our ruthlessly pragmatic modern age. If the rest of the world is spiralling towards uncertain peril —  then this is one way we can push back against the senseless use of capital and talent to enact only more violence and destruction — by using the little agency we do have to amplify this magic and renew the souls of those we love.
