The sound of this set I am beginning to play under Alias - Muska Jen - 

The name was inspired by Chia Jen, an artist in Melbourne who is responsible for the decor and painting/artwork of all my stages, as when we are on festival sites working, she selects tracks very much of the kind in the first 1.5 hours of this mix and has inspired me very much over all the years of working with her.

For the latter half, it is primarily from my record collection I never get the chance to play.

For this mix, I wanted to break it up so it was pleasurable, deep and moody, a bit weird at times, hypnotic but then send it home with a little more dancefloor-friendly music. ;  

I am booked at peak time so often that my deeper sound rarely gets explored. This compilation of music is all tracks that I either have had on vinyl for many years, favourites I listen to at home or tracks I like that are a bit too leftfield to play in my regular sets. 

I also wanted to stay away from my original style of fast pace layering and FX trick style mixing. 
This set honours a more traditional style like when I was playing on turntables and old mixers where essentially EQ and Volume fades where all you had. This was important to me to really capture the essence of these age old tracks that are long, hypnotic and minimal. 

This is much more aligned with music and artists I have a deeper sounding connection with. 

This is an unplanned DJ set mixed live with some minor edits later with an additional three tracks added in ableton at the end to show off some original productions in the closing minutes and make the mix come together on time.

Found this  Requiem for a dream bootleg i made on my old mac over 6 years ago.

I remember really loving this piece composed by Clint Mansell and performed by the Kronos Quartet. I did not want to change the original too much just wanted to hear it with a bit more beef. Thinking i may grab the stems chuck into Abelton and give a new facelift.

LTEC 2015 CLOSING SET

I am very humbled and grateful to have had played so many wonderful festivals in Melbourne this summer 2014. 
However it is the closing set at the ever amazing NYD festival Let Them Eat Cake that i look forward to the most and hold dearest to my heart. I would like to thank everyone who was there for sharing the experience and would like to further more share the set from the night with this upload. 

For anyone who was not there i hope you enjoy the mix just as much as i did playing it, thanks to everyone for allowing me the privilege of expressing myself in the art of production and djn. With so many amazing sounds out there in the world of electronic music i am overwhelmed that the techno infused bass music sound i call bushtechno has been so well received and resonates with so many people.

Thanks again and looking forward to sharing more musical and dancefloor adventures with everyone in 2015

Muska @ LTEC 2015 - Closing set

My old friend Bec Simms recently gifted me a real blast from the past—my first ever demo/mix CD from 2005, recorded entirely on vinyl. I printed 200 copies under the name Muska Touchin Bass, with my number for bookings, and handed them out to clubs, bars, and ravers across Melbourne. That CD led to my first residency at Esco Bar, thanks to Russ Macumberr, who gave it a spin. Its there the owner Paul O'Brien gave me my first DJ job.

Even Boogs got his hands on it, and he was so impressed with the first track—a rare Bloc Party and Peaches collab—that he ripped it straight off my mix. A huge honor from someone who had every record in town.

Listening back fills me with nostalgia for the gritty electro sounds of South Yarra and the days we were dubbed "Toorak Trash," spinning tunes across Melbourne. It reminds me of a younger me and a smaller scene, but also how that sound has inspired my current journey back to it—this time with new tech and sound design.

I've played many genres over the years, but this mix was my ticket into the clubs, helping me break through as a full-time DJ, just like the top guys around me at the time. - Boogs / T-Rek - Luke McD - Mckirdy Sunshine Trott Nick Coleman - And it not only worked but it did the ultimate thing music does and created friendships with the mentioned and many others.

With my 20th anniversary coming up, it feels right to share this mix.

Melbourne’s own MUSKA returns to Lo-Fi-45, this time showcasing his original works with the EP “Kymatica / 37 Degrees”.

MUKSA has spent years both behind the decks and behind the scenes of some of the country’s biggest underground music festivals and club events. As the head of ORGANIC AUDIO, MUKSA has recently received praise for his unique themed stages at Strawberry Fields and Babylon Festival.

MUSKA’s ‘Bushtechno’ sound is on point with this EP, perfectly suited to the outdoor environment. The music doesn’t rush; taking it’s time to set the scene, beckoning with one long crooked finger to join the fun. Acquiesce and be drawn in to the surging basslines and winding soundscapes, evoking fond memories of dancing barefoot in the dust.

On the remix front, local up and comer KANE LAIDLEY gives us his spin on “37 Degrees” with an understated deep-tech cut. Combining a dark bassline with elegant rolls of percussion, the mix is a well-matched addition to the package.

This was recorded July 23rd at Revolver Upstairs Monday Morning. The set is a fusion of smooth transitions between clubtechouse sounds into a sunrise  bushtechno influenced set taking punters into the early hours of the morning.

The mix was recorded live on 3cdjs pioneer 800 mixer totally on the fly, It is 2 hours long and after a decade of djn i am really excited to share this set (and some of the mixes in it). So strap in for the journey as the set really has something in it for everyone and gels together ever so nicely. Available for download!
