There is a tyranny of hope
which attaches itself
to an unspoiled life.

Shattered.
Perhaps next time?
Hope is this thing with feathers
that takes chunks from our flesh,
then flaps away with but a
mellowing laugh left in its wake.

Battered.
It won't happen again.
Slammed against the cold wall of reality,
it makes you open your eyes
to the foolishness of thinking
tomorrow will be a better day.

Tattered.
Where's the bright side?
Torn and tormented yet still
pressing onwards to a dream so real,
but like a mirage which never
quite seems to be attainable.
