Rant: I'm tired of having to promote myself as a performance artist (DJ). I'm always asked what genre of music I play, and I can never give a straight answer. Dubstep? I mean, I don't play much of skrillex and bass cannon. Beatport Top 100/Proghouse/Big Room house? I get ticked off at how repetitive it is, how much of it sounds the same, to the point that people can mashup eleven tracks and they ALL SOUND THE SAME (search 'Epic Mashleg' by Daleri). Trap? Yeah, but not the shitty edits (Bohemian Trapsedy? ffs no) Moombahton? Oh hell yes, but nobody knows what that is.
So I just played an hourlong mix to myself. Open format. Transcending several genres of music. And I have no idea how I can show this to someone and get them to hire me for a nightclub party, or even just bring me out to a friendly house party.
"Yo, bro, check out this SWEET MIX full of TRAP, CHILL SHIT, and DISCO, and HOUSE..." that's not going to fucking cut it.
This is the new age where MY GENERATION, MY PEERS, that are so schizophrenic and adhd and whatever that nobody ENJOYS the music being played.
I almost want everyone I'm playing to to be under the influence of something just so they can enjoy the music. Is that bad? I think so. I'm ticked.
