I am the grandchild who lays fresh flowers on the Boer graves at St Helena and the Bahamas, who sees in the mind's eye and suffers the suffering of a simple peasant folk, death, concentration camps, destroyed homesteads, a dream in ruins. I am the child of Nongqause. I am he who made it possible to trade in the world markets in diamonds, in gold, in the same food for which my stomach yearns. I come of those who were transported from India and China, whose being resided in the fact, solely, that they were able to provide physical labour, who taught me that we could both be at home and be foreign, who taught me that human existence itself demanded that freedom was a necessary condition for that human existence. Gitkin sold guitars. To be precise, he re-branded, sold and traded knock-off Gibsons. A lone, travelling salesman, he toted his counterfeit wares to guitar stores and music emporiums. His trade took him to most corners of the USA, passing through big, smoggy cities and small towns. His nights were spent at not-so-salubrious motels. It was at those nocturnal stop-offs that he’d often cross paths with newcomers to the States. His fellow travellers were mostly immigrants, newly-arrived, from places like Ethiopia, Mexico, Indonesia.

His illicit musical wares were his way of making a connection. He’d strike up tentative, half-understood exchanges; part old stories and legends, part musical dialogue, rough-and-ready riffs, enthusiastically plucked out. Other times, late night jam sessions would quickly escalate, repurposing nightstands for drums and mini bar contents – packets of nuts, or bottles of beer – for makeshift percussion. A self-taught, sometimes-musician, those memorable evenings informed amateur recordings to cassette tape: a patchwork of worldly sounds, a document of new friendships and fresh perspectives.

Or at least, that’s the story as Brian J Gitkin has been able to piece it together. This album, ‘5 Star Motel’, is by a different Gitkin, an ode to the one described above. Or to put it another way, this is the younger Gitkin’s homage to his elder relative: the elusive, guitar salesman uncle he never met. A steady drip of anecdotes have construed an image of his relation’s itinerant, huckster lifestyle. Finding a cassette of his recordings, it spoke of the effect of those encounters: lo-fi and scratchy, the music leaped seamlessly, in difficult to discern ways, between different far-flung styles.

On ‘5 Star Motel’, that younger Gitkin has sought to expand the philosophy reaped from his uncle. The guitar is common thread, the raft to navigate a sun-dappled stream of ideas. It’s an embrace of cultures where folkloric stringed instruments still rule, or where they’ve led to a more recent embrace of the electric guitar. Gitkin traces the loose, meandering paths which join them together.

It’s about America, the world outside its borders, and the inscrutable, inevitable dialogue that exists between them. Take ‘Cancion Del Rey’, where the sound of Peruvian chicha – steady-moving, alluring, and lyrical – winds its way through Gitkin’s fuzz-filtered licks, and the rhythm underpinning it. Or ‘Yama’, where Middle Eastern influences echo out of grooving, cyclical riffs. Touching on the distinctive tones of Tuareg music and the Sahara, too, ‘Grand Street Feast’ charts a sand-dusted, melodic misadventure.

In the five years following his last solo album Moon People, Nickodemus has continued to spread his global sound through endless DJ tours, recording in studios, and scouting new music for his acclaimed Wonderwheel label. He’s made some new friends along the way too, with his constant journeying helping culminate in the new full-length A Long Engagement, a sonic portrait of 25 years of connecting people through music. 

Nickodemus has been active touring the entire globe since the mid 90s; as a producer he's released three albums, remixes for everyone from Bob Marley to Thievery Corporation, and 10 Turntables on the Hudson compilations that have established him as a seasoned musical traveler who excels most when playing in diverse settings that thrive on vibrant sounds. His new work is the latest chapter of his musical vision, offering global rhythms rooted in deep, introspective electronic moods built for the dancefloor. 

Throughout the 13 tracks of A Long Engagement, Nickodemus reflects on his rich history working in NYC club music and around the world, including some fresher analog sounds alongside collaborators new and old. Highlights include a new track with Carol C, who sang on cult classics like “Cleopatra in New York” and “Mariposa," three tracks with Brooklyn's afro-beat group Antibalas, and the soulful house keys of Brooklyn native Victor Axelrod. You’ll also hear Grammy nominated Innov Gnawa on the thumping dance-floor version of "Mystic Molay,” while Ninja Tune revered vocalist Grey Reverend lends a soulful vocal to album’s finale 'Music Man.” Like all of Nickodemus’ past musical gifts, A Long Engagement is another worldly musical journey that pays homage to the artist’s city roots and decades of hard-working curation across the world's continents.

The song speaks about the tales and teachings of our fore fathers in Kisii language, a bantu tribe from the western side of Kenya.
The song is an encouragement of people to embrace their cultural roots.
Both artists met through a mutual friend in Ngalah Oreyo’s studio – Boxhouse Media - and developed a vibe for this record.

King Sobo is a singer and poet, originally from Kisii region, and nowadays based on the coast of Kenya.
Ngalah Oreyo is a singer ,producer and sound recordist from Nairobi Kenya.

Javier Martínez, alias Dj Neber, nació el 17 de mayo de 1986 en la ciudad de chihuahua parte San Luis Potosí a los 2 años de edad, radicando hasta la actualidad, Dj Neber prende vuelo en la música a partir del año 2001, luego de haber pasado cuatro años dentro del graffiti, break dance, dándole una teoría práctica de la cultura maravillosa en la que se estaba comprometiendo.
En el 2002 conoce a un grupo de chamacos que se convertirían en sus más fieles amigos de batallas en la tarima de los jams: mc nocked, mc atiko, mc ackre, mc cimok, mc tia, forman un grupo llamado Batallón Mexika. Así Dj Neber sin saber lo que estaba por suceder compra su primer equipo de computo y un software para realizar sus primeras instrumentales hip hop.
En el 2004 empieza a conocer un sin fin de sub-géneros que se desprendían del estilo doble H, como el DRUM&BASS conociendo este estilo de bajos burbujeantes y baterías al máximo de locura rítmica, su mente y su cuerpo explotan llevándolo a dos años de extenso conocimiento de este estilo.
En el 2006 comienzan las mezclas y los experimentos, esto después de ya haber hecho ya una pequeña historia en el hip hop de su región con tres maquetas o LPs con sus amigos ya mencionados, Dj Neber tenía una incógnita en ese momento ¿qué será de mi vida?
Dj Neber deja la música, para dedicarse a su carera gastronómica. Luego partió a diferentes partes del país y del contiene para trabajar y también dedicarse a su persona (madurez, constancia, compromiso).
En el 2010 llega un nuevo aire y Neber toma las riendas de la música nuevamente… ahora con una nueva idea que proceso mediante sus años de reflexión y viajes de trabajo. La música latina tan linda, cultural, y de mucha fiesta y alegría, que demuestra una raíz llena de originalidad y mucha pasión. Surge el nuevo proyecto ( cumbia/hiphop ) dos vertientes musicales únicas llenas de mucho ritmo y de lucha social, pero a la vez tan distintas, dos culturas tan distantes se unen para que Dj Neber logre un estilo único y que a su vez emprenda una lucha por la apreciación de la música de raíz en Latinoamérica mezclada con vertientes de nuevos géneros musicales que ahora forman parte del escenario global.
