TL;DR version: This is an ambient remix of "Closer" by deadmau5, a project that started as a house track and has been in hiding for two years.

The version that actually matters: At some point in the summer of 2012, I got to listen to "Closer" by deadmau5. While well-made (especially the ambient first half), some of Joel's artistry was lost on me when the electro came in. I then made it my goal to capture the beauty and wonder of the first half into something more graspable -- in pretentious artistic terms, I wanted to make a remix.

I listened to the track intently, watched "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (where the five-note motif comes from), started putting a house track together...and it fell to the wayside for what I'm assuming is nearly two years.* After seeing project after project go into development hell this academic year, I decided to check out my scrapped files (this is why you NEVER delete project files) and came upon it. I had long forgotten about it, but immediately saw its potential as an ambient track instead of house. The only true house element left over is the distorted pluck, which plays a brief role around 1:20.

I'm beginning to think that ambient music is my "calling." I've done well in dance genres in terms of composition, but audio quality is always a headache. I've always done a better job with breakdowns and build-ups than the dance portions themselves. The audio quality for more chill stuff is much more clear cut, and the instrument options more liberating.

Something Meaningful, Something Important (Original Version)

This is AECO's take on the track, which seems to fall under world beat. When I sent over a demo of the original version, he replied with drums overlaying the original audio. I went ahead and transferred the patterns to FL Studio, with a few touches of my own.*

There's some cool commentary on how this song came about in the original version's description, so feel free to check it out. For the purpose of credit, though, this is a reinterpretation** of "Closer" by deadmau5, itself based on the main five-note motif from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." The movie (and soundtrack) are timeless, and "Closer" tastefully written, so check out both.

*He has Ableton while I use FL, so he couldn't edit a raw project file.
**I don't feel like "remix" is the appropriate term, but I won't be offended if you call it that.

Something Meaningful, Something Important (AECO Version)

JESUS HEADBANGING CHRIST. THAT WAS FANTASTIC. That might be one of my best mixes ever. No kidding. It's also a good chance to (if I haven't already) prove that I love the dirty and filthy styles as much as I love the hyped-up and melodic ones. Any style is fantastic if you have a good producer behind it.

Last week, I said I didn't know how I was going to top the hardcore mix. I think I just did. If I ever have a live show, I'm definitely using "One Step Closer" and "Run Riot."

[Hardcore] SotNTV Mix #86 08/14/2014

Some old stuff mixed right in with the fresher tracks, including a little "reggae sandwich" near the middle third. This is what DnB dreams are made of. There were some adversities in the mix, which I handled like a pro. That's the coolest part of this industry at times.
