Solid Steel (1st November) Having announced that Four Tet will be joining the line up for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary night at Fire in London on 6th Dec, we now hand over the decks to him for a 2 Hour exclusive mix. 
Four Tet's history with the show extends back to his first mix in 2001 and part of the Solid Steel US Tour that year with DJ Food, DK and Bonobo. He was also the first guest at the monthly Solid Steel club night in 2004, with more mixes to follow and his music has been consistently played on the show. 

As with all our 25th Anniversary guests, we asked for something different and here's what he said about his mix;

"This mix is made from unofficial edits and mixes.  I guess these edits were mainly made to be played in clubs and I've always like the tradition of DJs extending and rearranging to make things work in their sets.  Most of the edits here are unreleased because they are just tools for DJs really.  The Black Unity one was done for the Solid Steel US tour that I did in 2001.  Thanks to Daphni, Floating Points and Happa for the edits I got from them."

Welcome to New Orleans: A tribute to New Orleans Funk and Soul is the work of New Orleans native, DJ Personify. Raised in the Crescent City, the die-hard Hip-Hop fan learned early on that many of the samples he discovered originated in New Orleans. He soon became infatuated with the Funk and Soul music recorded there and has spent the better part of the last twenty years immersed in the culture of those records. Personify’s passion for New Orleans' music and culture extends to the present day and is manifested in this DJ mix masterpiece. Lovingly compiled, all of the artists featured on the mix are native to New Orleans with the exception of Hugo Montenegro who plays alongside Al Hirt (a New Orleans native) and The Headhunters, who are included here because of their work with Bill Summers (a life-long New Orleanian). All songs and samples used on this mix were recorded from vinyl sources. Some notes on the mix:

I was introduced to Bowie as a kid, thanks to my Dad playing and singing his music all the time at home. He absolutely loves Bowie and we both shed a tear the day he died! I’m really, really grateful to my Dad for instilling his music into me early on, because I doubt I would have quite such profound love for it without the early introduction.

The tracks in the mix are the tracks I know and love, and probably the ones most people are familiar with - mainly the ‘hits’, I guess. While working on the mix I started to delve further into the Bowie back catalogue and have found some absolute gems. I was tempted to include them and lean the mix more toward his unknown stuff but I wanted it to reflect my own personal Bowie experience up to now and wasn’t too fussed about appearing to have a vast knowledge of his work, because in reality I’ve only scratched the surface, so far. 

It wasn’t hard to choose the tracks I wanted to include, but working out how to present them as a mixtape took some thought. I haven’t spent as long at the ‘drawing board’ stage of a mix before. It was clearly going to be quite different from one of my party mixtapes - the pace had to be slower (you can’t cut off a Bowie track after a minute as they are too epic/well known and often tell stories which need to be played out), I couldn’t add beats/acapellas as it would be sacrilege and sound bad, I couldn’t do too much mixing as it just wouldn’t work with a lot of the music - and so I decided to approach it as a documentary-style mix, using speech samples from interviews to add some extra layers and help bridge some of the tracks which changed style or tempo too dramatically to blend or drop. I also wanted to try and get some humour in somewhere, and luckily found a lot of gold from people imitating Bowie in different shows. 

I knew I had to put a turntablist/hip hop kind of stamp on this somehow, to reflect my DJ style and personlise the mixtape. I worked turntablism in by making a cut and paste intro and throwing in the odd scratch when dropping samples. Generally the whole thing was treated quite delicately so as to honour the memory of the freaky old bastard as best I could.

So yeah, that’s how it turned out!

Our 25th Anniversary slot this week features Richard Dorfmeister who appeared on the show in 2003 and featured many times as one half of Kruder and Dorfmeister, as well as his project Tosca with Rupert Huber, amongst others. Opening with ECM artist Steve Tibbetts, his mix floats between Gui Boratto, his own lush edit for Selah Sue, acoustic guitar of Jeb Loy Nichols and the dubbed out Rhythm & Sound featuring Cornell Campbell on vocals. He then weaves through Pat Metheney, the dub version of Sunset from Grace Jones' last album, blues from Ry Cooder and ending with a couple of tracks from his recent Tosca album 'Odeon'.

You don't mess around when labeling someone as a musical pioneer; it’s a dangerous path to tread. When it comes to the name DJ Nu-Mark however, it’s a safe bet.
As a Los Angeles native, Producer, Turntablist and member of the legendary Hip-Hop group Jurassic 5, DJ Nu-Mark is considered one of the most innovative on the scene. He continually showcases his expanding taste in music through live sets and dj streams where he displays rare covers, multi-track edits and performs his children’s musical toy set.
Nu-Mark ignited his career releasing Kanye West’s debut production with Chicago native, Grav on Correct Records while simultaneously producing the Jurassic 5 EP circa 1996. Nu caught solo acclaim with the drop of his industry celebrated Blend Crafters EP which featured his timeles cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and featured production for MF Doom. Nu’s debut LP, Broken Sunlight revealed his innovations into a jaw dropping collection of heartfelt music featuring Aloe Blacc, Quantic, Large Professor, Bumpy Knuckles, A-Skillz, J-Live
Tiron & Ayomari, and Charles Bradley.
It comes as no surprise when you see the list of coveted stages that Nu-Mark has performed on around the world, including Glastonbury and Coachella. As per his stellar reputation of being one of turntablism and sound design, Nu-Mark has also judged numerous DJ competitions including Red Bull Music Thre3style with Jazzy Jeff, DJ Craze, Skratch Bastid and many more.
You can also add in Nu-Mark's own label – Hot Plate Records, which has released a hoard of production collaborations, including his sought after Run For Cover LP in 2021 featuring Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, Full Crate, Jungle Fire, The Traffic and more. Nu brought along Pharcyde’s Slimkid3 under the
faction TRDMRK on two albums featuring Del the Funky Homosapien, Diamond D, Darondo, Guilty Simpson, and Murs which shot to number one on the CMJ charts.
Nu-Mark's ongoing “Zodiac Tracks” is further testament to the fact that music is a life blood for this man. With his unwavering adoration of vinyl, the renowned collector pays homage
to pivotal artists by mixing them seamlessly in their respective astrological sign in live Birthday tribute videos. The project has been so successful that, after reaching millions of views, Nu- Mark teamed up with Method Man (Wu-Tang Clan) for an exclusive song to honor all the astrological signs in a song called “Zodiac Killah”.
Nu has a keen eye for musical evolution. Known for his trademark ability to conjure up sounds from the most bizarre of items, including a collection of children’s toys, late night talk show host and producer James Corden enlisted Nu-Mark to take on the role of in-house DJ for the hit TV show –
Drop The Mic.
To date, Nu-Mark has been featured in the critically acclaimed documentaries / motion pictures; Scratch, KeepinTime, Where We’re From, Coachella: The Movie, Rock the Bells, Popstar and MacGrubber.
