Amidst a schedule full of hyping up dances across Europe from behind the decks, luckily L Plus found time to create a brand new banger. “Rocks” co-opts words from physics icon Stephen Hawking to narrate the opening. We're being invited on a interstellar musical journey, moving through expansive layers of regal chords. There's an old skool raviness in the harmonies, gently punctuated by touches of percussion. And then he cuts through all that and slams us hard in the face with a force nine build. We're landed in a soundscape dominated by an impossibly bouncy bassline, ricocheting between modulations. Steel-gloved punches of kick and snare drive the wave of energy, while little touches of acidic synth fly the flag for those early nineties vibes. Amidst rib-rattling low end and rhythm-programming fireworks, this tune does exactly what the title promises.

Celebrating two decades in business, Technique Recordings have opened up the vaults and handed out the stems of some of their biggest tunes to some of the sickest producers around. We had warnings of what was to come with DC Breaks' remix of Tantrum Desire's 'Airhead' and Glitch City's take on Drumsound & Bassline Smith's 'Skumbag', and cuts from this album have been shelling down raves and festivals all summer.

Now, here's what we've been waiting for.

This album, spanning the full twenty years of Technique history, showcases the real strength and depth of the catalogue. Anthems like Crissy Criss & Youngman's 'Kick Snare', Drumsound & Bassline Smith's 'Crossfire' and Tantrum Desire's 'Reach' all get reconfigured to take heads off all over again. The bossmen have even resurrected their Future Tech moniker to give a 2019 upgrade to TECH 001.

And the array of remixers recruited take us all the way across the spectrum of contemporary drum 'n' bass. The likes of Bladerunner and Marky rub shoulders with AMC and The Prototypes...this album is as musically multi-faceted as it is star-studded. In summary, this is how to celebrate a birthday in style. Some of the biggest tracks from the back catalogue given the remix treatment by some of the biggest artists in the scene. IZo Flight - Rain

Even amidst one of the world’s worst pandemics with the emergence of the coronavirus, 2020 has been a mammoth year for long-standing Porto drum and bass stalwart Oder, who already counts the likes of Andy C, Pendulum, Steve Aoki and even Jay Z among his supporters. Having recently previewed five vibrant cuts from his debut album Chain Reaction including “This Feeling”, a slinking number centred around voweled basslines and playful melodies, “Euphory”, a nostalgic tribute to 90s rave music, and “Never Say Never”, a chugging, rap-oriented banger, he now returns with the long-awaited LP, weighing in at a colossal sixteen tracks. 

Throughout the project, Oder showcases a deft ability to craft infectious melodies, deploying ambitious sound design throughout including mesmerising, bitcrushed arpeggios on the halftime heater “Brainwash Stream Program” and fluttering stabs on “Overdrive”. While the lion’s share of the project can be considered dancefloor drum and bass, he draws audible influences from all corners of the D&B spectrum. “Mojito” utilises jungle-tinged breaks and snarling growls, while “Dream Catchers” borrows elements from the liquid playbook and the plucky, distorted leads on “Utopia” are reminiscent of classic techstep, busily meandering atop rapid-fire basslines. 

A number of intriguing collaborations are strewn throughout the album. On “Utopia”, London producer and dancefloor specialist Cabbie lends a hand. Meanwhile, on “Comes the Light”, Sydney singer Stella Rhymes, whose music has featured in the Netflix original series Sense8, lays down a moving topline which perfectly complements the track’s swirling synths. Finally, on the outstanding “Moving Fast”, stateside rapper Jurnalist brings some fast-paced bars into the equation atop chopped-up retro samples to make for an exhilarating listen. All in all, Chain Reaction is the perfect encapsulation of Oder’s wide-ranging production abilities, catering for a variety of tastes and cementing his already impeccable credentials as one of Portugal’s finest musical exports.
