Wanted to Cover this song forever and am grateful that I had the opportunity. This started as an improvisation by U2 guitarist The Edge, with the others joining in. It was recorded in 3 takes at Slane Castle in Dublin. The castle on the cover of The Unforgettable Fire is not Slane, but Moydrum Castle.
The lyrics do not specifically mention heroin, but Bono has introduced the song at concerts by saying it is about heroin addiction. A friend of theirs, Phil Lynott from the group Thin Lizzy ("The Boys Are Back In Town"), died after years of heroin abuse in 1986.
This is the second song on the album where Bono sings about a heroin addict. The first was "Wire.

Norma Jean from the band Chic has one of the strongest voices I have ever heard.  A true professional.  I have been around a ton of vocalist, she is the real thing, better than the real thing.  This was written for someone that I will not mention because she turned it down. I still to this day can't figure out why.

If any of you all producers are wondering.  Bashiri plays straight through from beginning to end of track.  No Loops.  He uses 2 or 3 percussion instruments at a time on each track and PLAYS Straight Through.  Locked in better than an MPC.  Amazing to watch...
