Im Juni 2011 erscheint das erste Album von DJ Phono auf dem Hamburger Label Diynamic. “Welcome To Wherever You’re Not” ist ein Werk der Gefühle - der erweckten, der blühenden und der enttäuschten Gefühle. So etwas entsteht nicht über Nacht. Auch nicht in einer Serie von Nächten. Vielmehr haben sich DJ Phono und sein Produzent Jimi Siebels (A DIFFERENT JIMI / EGOEXPRESS / IT'S RECORDS) für die Realisierung jede Menge Zeit gelassen, zwei Jahre waren es insgesamt.

“Ich habe nicht konstant an dem Album gearbeitet sondern auf Momente gewartet, in denen es mir möglich war, aus einem Gefühlszustand heraus, Musik zu machen. Während der Arbeit ist es dann häufiger gelungen, eine Stimmung, die man in dem Moment verspürt, in der Musik einzufangen. Das ist für mich einer dieser Glücksmomente, die man als Musiker manchmal hat - das Gefühl, dass man so eine Stimmung durch die Musik konservieren konnte. Musik und Musiker als eine Art Medium, ... Gerade im letzten Jahr war ich oft in emotionalen Zuständen, die zu Momenten geführt haben, in denen ich das konnte. Und Jimi ist auch ein sehr spezieller Typ, mit feinen Antennen, der sich auf die Stimmungen der Stücke eingelassen hat - und er ist jemand, der viel von seinen Stimmungslagen in die Musik hineinbringt, ein fühlender Mensch.”

Das Resultat - “Welcome To Wherever You’re Not” - ist ein Album, das DJ Phono selbst gern hören mag. Und Jimi wahrscheinlich auch. Es definiert sich in einem Dazwischen, zwischen hier und dort, zwischen Main Floor und Backroom, zwischen groß und klein, zwischen gestern, heute und morgen, zwischen Pop und Club, kurz: zwischen den Welten. Auf dem Hamburger Fischmarkt beispielsweise, unweit des Pudels, wo DJ Phono gern auflegt, bemängelt man das viele Fleisch. Am Schlachthof wiederum, genau gegenüber von DJ Phonos Bunker-Studio, riechen sie den Fisch. Dafür freut sich der Blumenbinder an der Ecke und lobt den bunten Wildwuchs.

Eine gemeinsame Qualität der 12 Songs auf “Welcome To Wherever You’re Not” ist ihre seltsame Art von vornehmer Zurückhaltung. Ohne dabei zum Möbel oder zur Tapete zu verkommen, bitten sie höflich, vorsichtig und unaufdringlich um ein wenig Aufmerksamkeit. Einzig und allein “Soll ich ein Loch graben?” entwickelt sich in seinen stattlichen achteinhalb Minuten zu einem kleinen (Rave-)Drama: Wenn in der Mitte des Songs endlich die Bass-Drum einsetzt, fliegen die Hände in die Luft. Aber am Ende wirkt selbst dieser Ausreisser wie der nette, kleine Bruder der Sägezahn-Monster. Mit ihm drohen weder Dehydrierung noch Kreislaufkollaps oder Organversagen, stattdessen verbreitet das musikalische Smiley nur etwas sonnigere Euphorie.

Der Rest ist Wohlklang.
Die Essenz dieser Musik haben Björn Beneditz (WCW Gallery) und Carola Wagenplast (Jochen Schmith) im Artwork aufgegriffen und ein sublimes Booklet im Sinne von “Welcome To Wherever You’re Not” entworfen. Jedes Album wird von Hand gemalt und ist somit ein Einzelstück.

DJ Phono wird dieses Album auch live vorstellen. Extra dafür wurde in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der stilsicheren Künstlergruppe Jochen Schmith eine Bühnenshow konzipiert, die im Rahmen der Release-Tour ab Herbst 2011 zu sehen sein wird. Eine Choreographie aus Halbleiterkristallen und Computerwissenschaft. Selbstentwickelte Prototypen aus Robotertechnologie und LEDs vollführen eine einzigartige, mechanische Tanznotation und bezirzen dabei Girls wie Boys. Klang und Bild finden zusammen und lassen uns am Ziel der Reise ankommen ...

dj phono 
has no fear of failing, for if he shall fail it will be with utter jubilation. he has nothing to loose, but is willing to risk everything. this makes him uncomfortable and unpredictable for all those who dare nothing in life. one thought that never troubles him during his morning toilet is: "impulsive menschen kennen keine grenzen".
even though being a member of the formation deichkind has evolved dj phono into a different person one should refrain from confusing the two. neither does dj phono produce music for deichkind, nor does their repertoire appear in his dj set.
he is the brain behind the deichkind liveshow and the whole overriding concept hidden within the techno lunacy. right from the off he has continuously and tirelessly attempted to force a gap between proletarian and sophisticated culture. he is a hellbender and merciless critic of the band luring them towards the end of the branch.
dj phono and bon jovi have nothing in common. this is why phono composes music that he likes. “party is my profession” is what he usually replies when being asked, why at 5 am in the morning he is still to be found at the pudel club - sober. there is always something new to discover, no matter where you look.
this explains why he has turned his back on the usual “hau den lukas”-method and ignores expectations. he rather likes to pick the bananas from the trees of slow mounting tensions, because dj phono is never bored on stage: yes, he will even turn of his mobile phone off just to be alone with you.
categories and limitations are only to be vanquished. people often create strange convoluted sentences in an attempt to describe his music. someone once said very fittingly: “emotional-temporary-minimal-but-then-more-and-more-techno-with- pop-appeal-thru-techhouse-suitable-for-dancing-taking-the-cake-techno-electro+surprise”. music associated with labels like kompakt, get physical, dial, playhouse, smallville, systematic, dfa, environ, ibadan, border community, ostgut ton, pampa, circus company, bpitch control and liebe detail. boring, dreary minimal-poppycock, is simply left out.
2011 he will start a new chapter.
dj phono will finally release his new album “welcome to wherever you’re not” on hamburg’s record label diynamic. the release will be flanked with a supranormal liveperformance. LEDs, hydraulics, roboter, radio technology and projections alternate the room. daft punk and etienne de crecy will be delighted. the concept comprises artists developing individual visual concepts for each album song and implying the respective localities and contexts.
dj phono is also a member of the band extra (1978). in 1998 he was european-vice-scratch-champion and incidentally, when he’s in the mood, he also produces and mixes music for others – former cooperation’s include artists such as erobi- que, egoexpress, commercial breakup, international pony and die goldenen zitronen.
dj phono has no hobbies.
