Sydney jazz house duo Nightset is the collaborative project of Sonny Grin and Kats, their trademark sound blending elements of nu jazz, house, and electronica with wild live improvisation. Quickly marking their ground as one of Australia’s most exciting emerging acts, Alec Brinsmead (Sonny) and Casper Trop (Kats)  are both working session musicians and are proven staples in the current Sydney live music scene.

Nightset’s latest release sees them team up with Chilean / Australian soul singer and guitarist Josué Vilches on ‘Diamond Eyes.’ The track is a buttery smooth, soulful house joint that strikes the right balance between live instrumentation and tasteful electronic production. The effortless RnB tones of Josué’s vocal, sits on top of a soulful house beat resulting in an undeniable feel-good listening experience, while the Original Mix strikes the perfect balance between polished, slick production and organic instrumentation. With memorable melodies and a laidback house feel, this track highlights Josué’s vocal prowess, with his intricate harmonies that float above the silky-smooth dancefloor groove.

The Live was actually recorded in one single take at Bodega Studio’s in Sydney, showcasing these three musicians’ certain talent and combined creative chemistry, and breathing fresh life into the original composition. In contrast, The Dub is the perfect party starter with its extended house grove that is sure to bring the dancers to the floor. Here Josué’s vocal has plenty of time to shine alongside vibrant disco riffs and lashings of playful percussion.

Lovebirds return to Glitterbox in 2025 with ‘Wrap Me Up’. Australian duo Close Counters return to The Remedy Project for their soulful slice ‘BUTTER BREAD’, featuring Irish singer-songwriter shiv. Fusing broken beat, jazz and neo-soul with electronic production, Close Counters’ eclectic sound first appeared on Melvo Baptiste’s revered imprint in 2022, with singles ‘SNAP TO IT!’ and ‘GET DOWN!’ earning them support from key tastemakers Gilles Peterson, Jamz Supernova and artists like Folamour, Barry Can’t Swim, Jaguar. A live act at heart, the band have made a name for themselves in the UK and Europe, recently touring across venues like Ninety One Living Room and Ronnie Scott’s as well as tastemaker festivals like Lost Village and Defected Malta; the band’s return to the UK will see them perform live at Brick Lane Jazz Festival, Love Supreme, Glastonbury and a slew of live dates across summer 2025, with their latest LP LOVERS DANCE ACADEMY climbing tastemaker charts in their home country and receiving major radio play across the UK and US. Now they unveil ‘BUTTER BREAD’ featuring house DJ turned singer-songwriter and producer, shiv. Previously impressing on Luke Solomon’s imprint with house collective Girls of the Internet for ‘Never Ever Ever’, shiv’s smooth vocals and effortless tone is the perfect match for Melvo Baptiste’s cool, tasteful imprint. ‘BUTTER BREAD’ is a faultless amalgamation of the two artists’ style; Close Counters’ laid-back composition is brought to life through complex production subtleties and live elements as shiv’s vocals stack in harmony, supporting her rhythmically decadent lyrics.

From deep musical origins in Detroit, rapper/singer/songwriter Illa J has been slowly navigating his way through the oft-turbulent waters of Hip-Hop since the tender age of 13, when the young John Yancey aka Illa J wrote his first rhyme alongside his brother, the late great J Dilla. After his brother’s passing in ‘06, he began teaching himself piano, bass and taking vocal lessons while finding himself touring the world and recording a slew of Dilla-related projects, notably being an active member of Slum Village until 2014. His first solo album, '08s Yancey Boys and the Frank Nitt 2013 collaborative album Sunset BLVD were both released on seminal label Delicious Vinyl. Feeling the need for a change creatively as well as geographically, in 2012 John moved to the future music hotbed that is Montreal ultimately making the connection with Canadian producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical aka Potatohead People (whose acclaimed Bastard Jazz debut album Big Luxury in Spring 2015 featured Illa J on two hit singles). The success of their initial collaborations inspired the team to dive into the studio and embark on Illa J's new self-titled solo album, and present an entirely fresh sound of his own.
 
The album Illa J, produced without any samples by Potatohead People alongside a few groundbreaking co-producers, showcases a more mature and at-ease Illa J who is equally comfortable on top of an electronic boogie-inspired beat (“Universe”) as he is getting grimey over a trunk rattling G-Funk joint (the Kaytranada co-produced “Strippers”). On tracks like the sparse, Rhodes driven “Cannonball” (co-produced by Montreal’s Noo Bap), and the early 90s Spiritual / Acid Jazz inspired “Sunflower”, Illa flexes his muscles through both song and rhyme. And of course being true to his roots, the classic Detroit boom-bap sound is ever present on joints like “French Kiss”, “Perfect Game” (quite possibly Rap’s only ode to bowling), and “Never Left”, a touching tribute to his brother and a call-out to abusers of Dilla's legacy.  Vancouver mainstay MC Moka Only contributes invaluably to the cohesive sound of the album as well, providing signature smoothed-out vocal choruses to tracks like “She Burned My Art”, “All Good Pt. 2” and “Who Got It” (co-produced by Mosaic). Dropping Fall 2015 on Bastard Jazz Recordings, Illa J is a brilliantly-produced, diverse, and long overdue solo effort from Yancey.
