As a lot of y'all know, I've been threatening 2 come out with the Purple Tape since just after mom died January 2016. It was supposed 2 be what "Bessie's Boy" ended up being, then after Prince died, it was supposed 2 be a Piggy-like Prince mix, but I gave some of that 2 LoLo. I think I had something like 5 different thoughts of what the Purple Tape was supposed 2 be, and they've all either went on other projects or died in a hard drive along with most of my Verbs shows (ugh). 

Anyway, I started making yet another interpretation of the Purple Tape late last fall, just 2 sorta combat the loneliness of COVID. It started off really well....I had a whole thing in mind - got Patrick H 4 the manufacture, Jeff and I started talking about art, I had about 45 minutes of material recorded (4 a 77-minute cassette) and I was juuuuuuust about 2 hit up Jayded 4 a video plan....then right after Christmas, the computer died. I tried keeping my head on the project, but my feelings were hurt by the halt of progress. 

I don't know if I'm gonna do anything with these yet -  I thought of completely redoing them 4 Piggy Seven, but we'll see. 4 right now, though, wrap your head around what was supposed 2 be Scene One of the long-fabled, long-overdue and long-suffering Purple Tape.

The Newcleus/Limp Bizkit thing had been performed live twice (I think) before I decided 2 record it. I wished that CEP was working properly (the computer itself, really) so that I would've been able 2 build it up properly 4 the recording. The ATWIAD bit before the verse was perfectly executed, although not EQ'd 2 my complete liking.

Here I am, psychoanalyzing demos like an asshole. Ugh.

Anyway, the RFTW bit. Hometown (and classmate) nods. That half-tempo Rain Forest is bonkers (thanks, Babu!). That one's 4 Chuckii Montgomery, who used 2 let me practice mixes over and over again in his basement.

I couldn't even tell U how I came up with that BTNH part. I sped up that Goapele and it just felt good. Sucks that I can't perform it live, though. Oh well. All of the Piggies have those studio magic things going off in them. however primitive the 'studio' is. Actually, it's more fun 2 me 2 do it that way. I like the challenges that not having ALL the toys at my behest gives me. I almost have 2 fight 2 make it make sense, and as it's been said time and time again, Flint folk like a fight. It's what we know how 2 do.

Out of all the demos of the Purple Tape, this is the most complete segment. This was actually supposed 2 be the start of Side 2. I had worked on it 4 about 3 days leading up 2 the holiday 4 a skate party that I had just gotten booked 4, hence the feel of the first blend, then of course it went into other places. The "Hill Street Blues" part was a nod towards my boy Jyarsch, as it was basically thought up 4 the first Comfort Food event I played at The Grasshopper. I hadn't performed that blend much since, so it made sense 2 finally included it. The Outkast blend was, as most Piggy stuff, a happy accident that actually worked out. The last bit is dedicated 2 Them Damned Trevino Sisters. Some slowed down freestyle on top of a hot Mobb Deep beat. Simple but effective. Love U Amy and Robin.....

leaving home ain't easy.

in late july/early august, I pretty much locked myself in the basement of the house in Fenton (aka The Dungeon) and played with records. 2 weeks of this. food was delivered, and so was the smoke. this was 2 be the final statement from a place that I called home 4 the best part of 13 years. a lot of humour was injected in2 this project...but so was a lot of pain. most of the subliminal messages in the mixes were 2 friends (and not-so-friends) in Detroit (my future home), with nods 2 my friends back home in Flint and my children....and my best friend/housemate/sounding board Kevin.....

It was originally released on cassette in late August 2013 on Convergent Sound. I don't exactly remember how many were sold, but I don't have a personal one, so that says something, I guess. 

It's almost the 2nd anniversary of this project, and I decided 2 let the allowed number of the ones who really like this project have it. Download, comment, share. 

I'm working on the follow-up as we speak. I don't have a release date - it'll happen when it's ready. Until then, vibe on this....

DJ Psycho - Ferric Oxide (Side B)

I joined Artfull Dodgers officially in 2005, while they were in the middle of working on what ended up being the "Off The Credenza" album. I had lent a hand 2 a few other projects under the Earthmovers Productions banner, including a track on Aslaam Mahdi's "Bibliography" album and the GOZGod EP by Aslaam and Gozza, while working on my own "Dissident" album (2006). 

My favorite AD song also happened 2 be the very last one we all worked together on (and actually completed). I went 2 MC Breed's funeral and burial - getting royally drunk in between both ceremonies - then decided 2 go 2 Kettering while Gozza was doing his radio show. I got even more drunk, then we picked up Jackpot along the way and went back 2 The Gozza Strip just 2 see what would come out. Since I had just come from a funeral, I didn't bring any records with me, so I did what I normally did and just started rifling through Brady's jawns. I dissected the "Eric B Is President" drums, and Gozza pulled out this kids' soundtrack record with the theme from "Jaws", from which we split the strings in 4 different ways (we ended up using just 3 of the splits). Brady had just gotten the Yosumi record series, one of which had an episode of "The Incredible Hulk" on it. That got used. A track was born.

It took another couple of days 4 Brady and Rex 2 figure out what they were gonna say, and my boys delivered. The ADs had this ever evolving formula that reminded me a lot of the RUN-DMC discography, wherein one member was always roaming in search of a different style of speak while the other stayed as steady as a rock. I made the decision 2 call the track "untitled" because there was no similar subject matter on the verses, other than mentioning my name. The track itself was darker than we had ever delved, and it was the musical direction I wanted 2 take the group in 4 the next album, which never got finished because of some reason or another (diplomatically spoken words here).

Released 09 January 2009 as the hidden track on "Hi. My Name Is Piggy McTiggers" (the first time that name was even used) and as part of the 2009 Bang Tech 12 Complilation on 22 May 2009.

I really would have loved 2 see where we could have taken this sound. Gozza and I were doing something near those lines musically 4 about a half year before things started 2 fall apart and we stared concentrating on my "Middle Finger University" album and B's "Here Comes Trouble" album. Brady and I even had a horrorcore/science fiction concept 4 the video, which was gonna be filmed in the field behind Holmes Jr. High on a particulary foggy evening, featuring every member of the Earthmovers crew. I mean....serious plans were made, but we had 2 roll with the ones that came through.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened had we continued that vision.....I wonder.....

Untitled Ft. Artfull Dodgers

See....Dre and me? That's my baby sis right there. Bad ass chick, ridiculously bangin' DJ, all around good people. Pretty much watched that girl come up from day almost one. She and I have played many shows 2gether...and she'd have me out at her stellar residency, BASSBIN!!!, at one of my favourite places in the world 2 play, Billy's Lounge in GR. She's a Detroit resident now (Bassbin!!! is still her baby, tho) and a continental traveler, but she and I...that's family 4ever, dig?

In 2010, she and I were working on projects at around the same time, she with an EP and I with the "Middle Finger Univerity" release. We'd share tracks all the time. I heard one of the last ones she did 4 her project, "Get 'Em Up", and I immediately asked 4 the stems. Went 2 Dodger Stadium (Brady Gozza's lab) and brought the stems with me, B already had this basis laying down, so we just coloured up the track and split the vocals. I wouldn't necessarily call it a hip-hop remix, because the elements are bordering on alternative and trip-hop. It's funky, though.

It's been a minute since its release, so I thought I'd just put this here up and let y'all have a fondle. Tell us what U think of it, eh?

SuperDre - Get Em Up (Lack Of A Fro Remix)

Recorded at 8 Mile High in Detroit through the month of December 2015, after my nervous breakdown at the Boiler Room show in Chicago.....and the conversation with my mother a few days later, which gave me the idea 4 "PIG MAC VI". I've been threatening a physical release 4 a while, and now, I think I'm ready 2 do that. 

Available on and after CHARIVARI 2019. Thanks 4 giving this thing love over the years. I see U. Piggy sees U.

(BTW: Piggy in 2020, like fried ice cream, is a reality. Cast your vote with conscience.)

DJ Psycho narrates: Piggy McTiggers VI: Bessie's Boy

Originally, this was supposed 2 be released on the "MIDDLE FINGER UNIVERSITY" album that I released on Christmas 2010, but it kinda didn't fit, because the track was made during my "scarytrak" period (more on that later). Birthed at DODGER STADIUM aka Brady Gozza's lab, it was created in anticipation of Pathway coming home. When he got out, he attacked this track with such attitude that it scared me on the initial vocal take. He listened 2 the track maybe twice on the way 2 Shanrock's place (where we cut the vocals and the scratches) and then just went the fuck in.  No drop-ins, no do-overs, none of that. What U are hearing are his first takes on front and ad libs. That's it. I ended up releasing it through the Bang Tech 12 Movement compilation (as always, I was the only wild card hip-hop contributor), where it stood out almost awkwardly.

People always ask me 'what was the sound at the end of that track?' Well....it's a dryer running full speed. Why? I think I was gonna use that sound 2 run in2 the next track on "MFU", but things happen.
