On 15th Oct 2023, I played a set at the Workinonit MF DOOM tribute at The Hip Hop Chip Shop, Manchester alongside the almighty OMA, who absolutely smashed along with UK MCs, Batfunk & Pique Roscoe. A huge thanks to all the Workinonit crew, Ozzie & the team at The Hip Hop Chip Shop for such an amazing event & for the honour of being asked to perform a DOOM set too!

It’s actually the first time I’ve played out using my own gear which made things much easier too, on trusty Technics 1210s, Pioneer DJMS-7, Serato & Phase, which is always bulletproof & makes things so much easier!  I forgot to record the set on the day, so decided to put out the unabridged version I planned.  On the day, I played about half of this after OMA. The mix is jam packed with all things DOOM from samples, remixes, covers, production & even an unreleased joint with the ever-elusive Mr Fantastic!

This mix is very special to me as it is dedicated to the honor of the late great J Dilla. I made this to showcase the versatility & amazing quality of work from one of the greatest producers of all-time. 
   From emerging from the gritty city of Detroit to showcasing his genius to the entire world before his passing at age 32, Dilla (also known as Jay Dee) always kept his love for all forms of music front and center. It's my honor and duty to continue to push music forward and keep his memory alive with everything I have in me. 
       I will post a tracklist soon but I want you all to just engulf the mix and embrace the rhythms. Music can truly change lives and we all must be creative in every aspect of our lives. Word to Dilla.
   Special thanks and honor to his mother Maureen Yancey, his mentor Q-tip, Questlove, Busta Rhymes, ILLA J, Madlib and the man who taught him : Amp Fiddler.

The Pharcyde is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their iconic album Labcabincalifornia by releasing a commemorative mixtape. In a collaborative effort, the #BeamMeUpSpinna mixtape is mixed by NYC’s DJ Spinna and features “Nasty Habits”, an unreleased joint from the vault that features Ralph Tresvant & Bobby Brown.  Imani & Bootie Brown also asked a group of producers to remix and add their own personal spin on a few of the Labcabincalifornia songs that you all know and love.

Dj Mike Relm re-works a mash up of “Drop”, SBBX remixes “Groupie Therapy”, Moka Only drops his version of “Y”, Ta'Raach teams up with Bootie Brown to co-produce “Devil Music, The Devils Kitchen Remix”, and The Pharcyde’s own Bootie Brown remixes “Runnin’.”

DJ SPINNA is a heavily touted presence in the international soulful house music scene. He is known for his vast accomplishments as a producer, is celebrated for his “Soul Slam” events and Stevie Wonder inspired  WONDER-Full Dj performances and subsequent collaborations.

The Pharcyde’s sophomore album “LabcabinCalifornia” was originally released on November 14th, 1995. The group enlisted a young and then unknown James Yancey aka J DILLA to produce beats, like the cult classic “Runnin.”  They also collaborated with director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” “Adaptation”) on the video for “Drop.” Labcabincalifornia has consistently and continues to reinforce their steadfast refusal to tread familiar artistic grounds.

One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. The year was 1997. It was a typical beautiful Seattle spring day where rain would come down at a moments notice and then make way for the sun. It was freshman year of high school and I was coolin with my boy Ramone in his pop's old Cutlass and we just knew we were doing it big. (Ahh the good old days) Anyway, it was an aforementioned rainy day and we were in the beautiful bliss of riding with no destination and enjoying life & good hip-hop. Ramone was one of those kids who had the big-ass books of CD's at all times. The dude had every CD that would come out. Mainstream shit, underground shit, obscure shit (what up C-Bo & Celly Cel) whatever you wanted, son had it. Like taking pride in having any and EVERYTHING you could think of. He lived in my building and was older, so we would cruise Seattle for hours trying to pick up chicks and absorbing that good shit that was coming out in abundance in those great times (Goodie Mob! Camp Lo! Keith Murray!). Anyway, this day I grabbed one of those heavy ass CD books when it began to rain and we were Mobb Deep'd out (if that's even possible. Hell on Earth is still one of the greatest albums EVER) and I saw the this cover of some dudes huddled in a classic pose that is Illadeph Halflife. I remember seeing them in a short article in Vibe or something but didn't really pay attention. "This any good?" I asked. My man looked at it and said "Hell yeah. I STAYS with that hot shit." Skeptical, I just gave him a look. This was the same dude who was championing E-40 and the Oakland cats MAD early (no diss but they had to grow on me. LOL) He grabbed the CD and put it on. Man, to this day I haven't been that blown away and mad at myself for underestimating anyone. The sounds and grooves I heard. Incredible beats! All anchored by the incredible drumming of some cat named Questlove. Black Thought and Malik B. killing it on EVERY track. The perfect singing and harmonies that showed a deep knowledge and appreciation for soul music. Why had I never heard of these dudes??!!! I prided myself on being a hip-hop head. What the hell!!!! I've since been a life-long fan and was definitely proud of them when they gained much-deserved commercial success and rightfully won Grammy's. I was amused when people hopped on the NeoSoul train and were trying to act like they were down all along. I cheered when Quest got his just due as a musical genius and a cultural icon. I loved the Soulquarian collective that spawned the incredible "Voodoo" and "Like Water for Chocolate" masterpieces. I championed the acts that they embraced and helped (Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Little Brother, JazzyFatnastees, Bilal, so many greats!) and I can truly say that they are one of the greatest groups in history. Not just Hip-Hop. In ALL music. And I still remember that day with much joy as the day I was introduced to The Roots. Enjoy. Buy all their albums. Y'all know how I get down.
