In early 2014 Strange Meat and DJ Relish released their first collaborative effort under the name Strange Relish. The idea was to create a landscape type sound yet keep it rhythmatic and interesting. With a growing society of people that want short cookie cutter sounds who can listen without having to sit, consume and think about what they are hearing; Strange Relish wanted to do the opposite, make music that was intelligent and captures the imagination. 

After their first track was released, Strange Meat posed the question to Relish; “what if we get a bunch of our friends from Sound Cloud to join us on a track for collaboration.” The idea was brilliant what better way was there to keep it interesting other than having 28 artists from all different walks of life with their own style and approach to making music cramming as much sound as possible into eight minutes?  So it was settled, they didn’t know how it would get accomplished but DJ Relish began working on a five minute Soundscape that would be the start of the result you are hearing now, Strange Relish & Friends “28” was born. 

Artist after artist one by one they passed the evolving track by personal messages. Asking the first ten to add whatever they wanted anywhere, once they felt like the track was where they wanted it they asked the rest of the artists to add about 15 seconds of sound to the end of the track but somehow incorporating a sample of the already recorded sound into their contribution. 

This process took time, way more time then they had originally ever dreamed of. Some people took hours to get their contribution submitted, others took weeks, others never responded at all. Most of the people apart of this collaboration probably don’t even remember being asked to be a part of it. But the result, the result is more beautiful than they could have ever imagined. 

That is the funny thing about creating music. You have a plan, you have an idea of what that plan should sound like, when it is all said and done, for better or for worse; the end result never sounds the way you envisioned. In the case of “28” it was absolutely for the better and they are excited to share that sound with you. Enjoy listening to this piece as much as I have.
