Rikochet 93 Darkcore Jungle Tekno - 2013_320K 100% Vinyl Mix

I've been working on this set on and off for over 3 years. I was constantly challenged with the tune selection. I made a 45 min mix in 2018 and loved it, kept it to myself, and then when I went to remix it I totally changed it. Anyway.. this is my '92 Happy breakbeat Mix. I actually played a lot of these tunes back in the day but I've definitely added to my 92 collection over the years. These are some of the best 92 piano tunes that I own, but there are sooooo many more OMG! That said, I'm trying to add tunes that you may not have heard me play before too to keep it interesting. This is Part 2 of a new series I'm creating to showcase some of the best of my collection in each of my early years. I started DJing in 92, but started raving in '88. Part one is 91-92 that I havent finished yet, but coming soon. Also, look out for my 92 darkside Halloween set coming in the next few months too. Thanks for listening. Njoy!

Bouncy UK Rave/Piano Breakbeat '92 30 Years On Mix @148 BPM

I've posted this set a few times over the years, but had to delete it becuase of limited storage. There must of been over 500+ downloads at the time, on top of the 500 tapes that were sold from Sydney record stores back in the day. Probably my first real jump up recorded set at the time, other than what JMA was doing at Club 77 on William Street Sydney at the time. The A Side has lots of energy with a lively feel. The B-Side (which is my favourite) is full of dark side classics.  Since then, I've played many old skool sets, and a number of these tunes from both sides continue to be old time favs for the Sydney crowd. This is the first time I've posted the tracklisting too. N'joy!

Instalment  No.4 of the JMA Tape Series B-Side. Released back in early 1997, Unlike the A-Side which see's a light jump-up style intro for a few tunes but then gradually steers down a heavier & moody, dark path to the very depths of drum & bass. The B-Side just starts dark and continues that way for the next 45mins with tunes from the best producers in the business at the time, So if you liked Side A (Which is on Mixcloud), I strongly recommend Side B.

I've posted this set a few times before, so many of you will have already heard it, but if you haven't and you like rolling amen's then this is for you. The A side is full of classics, while the B side, or 2nd half, is on a much darker jungle techno tip. Fans have told me that this is their favourite of the JMA series, but maybe that's because it was the first - you be the judge. Either-way.. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have over the years.

DJ Popeye JMA Vol 1 - Jungle Massive Australia 1995

Dedicated to our fallen rave brother Shaun Chatfield, where this long lost tape was recorded in early 94. Originally, an all-vinyl 45min mix on Side A. I used to play these tunes a lot back then, but most people knew me for my early morning breakbeat sets, or hardcore sets at raves. I saved a lot of my trance music for the recovery parties and Shaun's warehouse was one of the best for that. So many amazing memories!

Big thanks to Sean Glassford and Simone who managed to keep the tape for decades. 30 years later, I decided to remaster/remix the tape in digital format and add a number of other popular tunes that I used to play back then that were never seen in any of my tracklistings on future tapes, extending the mix to 1.20mins.

Lost World Domination 93' E Mix - Remixed July 2023

Following the release of the 93 Lost Tape, https://soundcloud.com/djrikochet/lost-world-domination-e-mix-remixed-july-2023 this is the set that I made after it in mid-1994. 

Kaleidoscope tapes were sold through Sydney's Central Station Records. Only on a 90min tape, so many tunes were left off it at the time. This is the set I wanted to play on the B-Side. All of these tunes were in my record box at the time but I just didn't get the chance to record them. This is a remix of the B-Side only. 

I actually remixed this set 2 years ago after I was informed about the lost tape being found. It was also close timing on the passing of our fallen friend, Shaun Chatfield, so I thought it was timely to pay homage to him with a memorable set of those times. It was Shaun who invited us to record the set in his lair, warehouse, rave dungeon, recovery pad, or whatever it was called, we had the best times of our lives in that place. This is the music we would often play back then, including hardcore, breakbeat, and lots of jungle of course - R.I.P. Shaun, miss you bro xx

DJ Rikochet JMA, Jungle Massive Australia.
1st generation Australian. Born 1971. Dutch Mother / English Father (which has influenced his music between UK breakbeat and Euro hardcore)
Rikochet began his DJing career at age 20 in the fresh and very underground 1991 Rave era. At the time, he was in the Australian Navy, which is how his earlier Dj pseudonym Popeye was created. Popeye’s first set launched at the legendary O’Mallys Hotel, Sunday recovery parties in Brougham St, Kings Cross, Sydney. Playing all styles of dance music from House, Trance, Rave, Hardcore, Breakbeat and Jungle. He became part of Sydney’s Rave and Breakbeat culture. DJing at various venues all around Sydney’s Clubs, Pubs and Warehouses, he become well known for his piano breakbeat and driving bass line style morning sets. With the release of the very popular, Junglistic Rowdiness and N4CER tape series in 94/94, Popeye’s sound was in demand.

During his early Rave career, Popeye played alongside Carl Cox, Slipmatt and many great Australian DJ’s. As a DJ competition panel judge, he also played numerous radio shows and was a columnist on the topic of Breakbeat and Jungle in the 90’s Rave journal, Juicy Red Apple & UK’s "Knowledge" magazine.

As a JMA founding member, Popeye was instrumental in championing the new cutting-edge sound of Jungle / Drum n Bass to Sydney through his various (and highly collectible) mix tapes. After the release of the JMA tapes (Vol 1. Jungle Massive Australia) in 1995, and a booking at Sydney’s Big Day Out festival (1997), Popeye changed names to Rikochet, and became the first Australian DJ to play Triple JJJ’s Mixup national radio 3 times, lagging only Carl Cox.
Since then, Rikochet has played alongside some of the most influential DJ’s and producers of the D&B community, such as Moving Shadow’s Rob Playford, Grooverider, Ratty, DJ SS, Kenny Ken, Dr S. Gachet, Chemistry & Storm, Klute and DJ Rap with MC Fearless to name a few.

After moving to Santa Barbara in 2015, Rikochet has played numerous gigs in LA, including multiple collabs with the 13 Crows Radio crew , DJ Binz & Jonny 5 and more recently with the local SB Jungle cats
33 years on, Rikochet now lives in California where he spends his free time balancing between a passion for Drum & Bass, Breaks & loads of old skool Jungle Techno, with a vinyl collection to die for.

Full of personal Darkside favs, some tunes you've heard on earlier mixes but most of them I'm mixing for the first time. This is an epic journey into darkness. Rikochet - 93 Studio Vinyl Mix (Maximum Respect Tango & Ratty)

I went through many mixed emotions putting this 3 hour set together out of MASSIVE RESPECT for the recent fallen DJ Tango (Jamie Giltrap). He was my favorite Jungle producer of all time. With over 50 of his tunes & remixes, you'll see just how talented he was. From early Rave, Jungle Techno, Jungle from the golden era, awesome jazzy/intelligent jungle to his more current club style drum & bass with the huge remix of Internal Affairs - Stylin, probably my fav all time 92 tune (a close second to the Egyptian tune). Unfortunately, I missed Tango when he was playing in Sydney around 10 years ago now, I was living in Melbs. I did, however, get the privilege to DJ with DJ Ratty at Club 77 in the mid 90's. Ratty, my fav DJ of all time and Tango my fav producer. A legendary duo! My heart goes out to his family and close friends. This is my tribute and thanks to Tango for the huge impact he has made on me and my DJ career.

The DJ Comp is over. I came 2nd or 3rd depending on who you ask because of the comp formatting, but none of that really matters. I think its a sick mix. Gave me a chance to choose from 350 "best voted" tunes from the era and add many tunes I've had for yonks and not recorded. Its a hardcore 92 set with lots of happy moments towards the end. Rikochet - 93 Darkcore Jungle Techno - Studio Vinyl Mix

A bunch of you would have already heard 75% of this set on Rikochet - 93 94 Jungle Techno Vinyl Studio Mix Vol 2. (Respect - Ratty & Tango), but that set was, in my opinion, to long, so I cut it in half (1.5hrs) and added 30 mins of more darkside techno, with 3 new tunes. I used to play these tunes back in the day at Omalley's Hotel in Brougham Street Kings Cross, Sydney. The morning recovery parties were always more fun than the night before. With seated bean bags, hand delivered fruit platters and party friendly, just awesome! After hours of hearing tunes & catching up with friends over recovery beers, under Popeye, I would play these piano sets to a full crowd into the evening - those were the days.

Finally, part 2 is available after the first release in 2013. I actually made 2 different sets in this mix, recorded immediately after I made the first set but I got distracted with new tunes, moving house and life in general. I had always intended to release either a techno mix or the old skool jungle mix (which is the 2nd half mostly), but now I’ve combined them and added a few extra gems for your listening pleasure. 

My inspiration for this mix goes out to the DJ’s at Skid Row 2SER Sydney, DJ & Producer Joey Beltram, the evening DJ’s at O’Malley’s Irish Pub Sydney from 92 (Luke Spellbound, Tru-Story, Ming D, Arthur RIP, and others). These were the days! “E” for Energy LOL!

DJing 92-Present

Australian Born 1971. Dutch Mother / English Father (which has influenced my music between UK breakbeat and Euro hardcore)

Rikochet began his DJing career at age 20 in the fresh and very underground 1991 Rave era. At the time, he was in the Australian Navy, which is how his earlier Dj pseudenyom Popeye was created. Popeye’s first set launched at the legendary O’Mallys Hotel, Sunday recovery parties in Brougham St, Kings Cross. Playing all styles of dance music from House, Trance, Rave, Hardcore, Breakbeat and Jungle. He became part of Sydney’s Rave and Breakbeat culture. DJing at various venues all around Sydney’s Clubs, Pubs, and Warehouses, he become well known for his piano breakbeat and driving bass line-style morning sets. With the release of the very popular, Junglistic Rowdiness and N4CER tape series, Popeye’s sound was in demand.
During his 3-year Rave career, Popeye played alongside Carl Cox, Slipmatt and a range of great Australian DJ’s. As a DJ competition panel judge, he also played numerous radio shows and was a columnist on the topic of Breakbeat and Jungle in the Rave journal, Juicy Red Apple & D&B in the UK "Knowledge" magazine.
As a JMA founding member, Popeye was instrumental in championing the new cutting edge sound of Jungle / Drum n Bass to Sydney through his various (and highly collectible) mix tapes. After the release of the JMA tapes (Vol 1. Jungle Massive Australia) in 1995, and a booking at Sydney’s Big Day Out festival (1997), Popeye changed names to Rikochet, and became the first Australian DJ to play Triple JJJ’s Mixup national program 3 times. 
Since then, Rikochet has played alongside some of the most influential DJ’s and producers of the D&B community, such as Moving Shadow’s Rob Playford, Grooverider, Ratty, DJ SS, Kenny Ken, Dr S. Gachet, Chemistry & Storm, and DJ Rap with MC Fearless to name a few.
After moving to Santa Barbara in 2015, Rikochet has joined forces with the L.A. 13 Crowz crew and more recently with the SB Junglecats
30 years on, Rikochet now lives in California where he spends his free time balancing between a passion for Drum & Bass, Breaks, Tech House & loads of Old Skool Jungle Techno , with a vinyl collection to die for.
