On 11th November, Leeds-based five-piece AUTOBAHN announce themselves to the world with their unapologetically sinister and aggressive self-titled debut EP. A record for, and of, the night, AUTOBAHN conjure the dystopian nightmare world of 80s post-punk across three unrelenting tracks. Consider them Leeds’ very own Lost Boys, cloaked in feedback, showing their teeth. Despite forming in February 2013, and playing their first gig just months ago, they appear eerily fully formed.&#13;
&#13;
The group - a bunch of unknowns - have notched up word-of-mouth acclaim for their handful of visceral live shows, appearing on stages with the likes of Merchandise and Eagulls. While those bands are appropriate touchstones for those new to AUTOBAHN, if you look closer you’ll notice in their velvet jackets and puffed shirts a stargazing glamour at odds with their peers.&#13;
&#13;
On the surface, AUTOBAHN are a classic modern day punk band. But dig a little deeper and there’s a colourful underbelly to their sonic ambitions, vivid like a new bruise. Their name’s a reference to Kraftwerk, hinting at a European intensity, while tracks like the scabrous ‘Lost Tongue’, are transgressive in the same way as early Public Image Limited. What’s more, there’s real catharsis at the heart of these songs: the opening track, 'Seizure', is about having a small fit in Brighton., while all the lyrics point to a very millennial sense of helplessness. AUTOBAHN 1. , then, is a bacchanalian trawl through the psyche, kind of unhinged, and staring right through you.&#13;

They have announced a UK tour with dates supporting Girls Names and the aforementioned Eagulls, as well as a special EP launch show at Brudenell Social Club, Leeds. Dates are as follows:&#13;

Sometimes I turn up to a gig for my 6am slot, and the room is pitch black, deafening, and sweat is dripping off the roof, and I think, hmm, what should I play?

A lot of my solo tracks aren't quite right for this sort of atmosphere, so I've been working on a new project designed more for dark sweaty holes in which we like to spend our weekends.

It's a collaboration with someone I have been working with for many years, who is releasing under the new name - Satirist. The first vinyl + digital release coming next week on Berlin's Killekill label. No pretty melodies this time. The name I will be releasing this work under is - SKEW (because it's a bit off).

The Spectral iteration of the Ghostly 15 mixes comes courtesy of Derek Plaslaiko (who recently completed a grueling 12 hour Boiler Room out of his home in Berlin: http://boilerroom.tv/recording/derek-plaslaiko-12-hour-set/). Some words from Plaslaiko on the emergence of Spectral Sound & the mix he has curated below:

"I met Sam Valenti IV in the later years of the 90's just after he started the Ghostly International label. I feel like I almost instantly connected with Ghostly due to the music, but also because of the asthetic. Sam & I had more than a couple conversations about labels like Factory and 4AD and how the art was synonymously as important as the music it accompanied. I couldn't agree with him more!

As Ghostly grew, I think Sam realized that the more dancefloor-oriented music should almost have it's own place. Enter Spectral Sound.

Spectral Sound often gets confused as Ghostly. For instance, I am considered a Spectral Sound DJ, yet there are plenty of times that promoters end up simply putting Ghostly International next to my name. This doesn't offend me or anything, but the labels are quite different, and equally as important in my eyes. Spectral went on to help pave the way for what would end up being the "minimal" sound embraced first in Berlin, and then the rest of the world. However, I wouldn't just pin Spectral down as a "minimal" label. I feel Spectral (as well as Ghostly) is a great example of a dance music oriented label putting out music they like regardless of what genre it falls under. House, Acid House, Deep House, Tech House, Hard Techno, Deep Techno, Minimal Techno... you can find all of this and a lot more within Spectral's vast catalog.

So, Sam has asked me to pick 15 of my favorite Spectral Sound tracks and I gotta say... this list is a really hard one to make! How do I chose only 15 cuts of this incredible catalog? And even if I did, how much of it would be occupied by tracks produced by Matthew, Tadd and Todd? To pick 15 favorites from just those 3 artists alone would be a difficult challenge, as they are easily 3 of my favorite producers of dance music out there! So, I tried to limit my picks of them to each of their project names.

I had been asked to to the mix compilation that accompanied the Spectral Sound Vol 2 compilation that came out in 2008. So, there are MANY of my favorite Spectral cuts on there (you can find it on Spotify). I mention this only because there are a few repeats in this list, but I just couldn't help myself because I still play those tracks to this day.

The pseudonymous “Ty-Rex” corner of Ty Segall’s oeuvre represents the nom-de-rock behind which Segall puts his spin on favored Tyrannosaurus Rex & T. Rex compositions. On November 27th (2015), Goner Records presents the release of the Ty-Rex full-length. After some time in out-of-print monetary nether-regions, this album compiles six-song Ty Rex EP (aka Ty Rex 1) originally released by Goner as a limited edition 12” for Record Store Day 2011 with the RSD 2013 two-song Ty Rex 2 7”. As if this wasn’t enough of a corrective gesture, Ty-Rex is expanded to include a previously-unreleased T. Rex cover as a bonus, but first… 

For those who missed out on this nook of Segall’s rapidly-growing footprint across the rock landscape, here is a cursory rundown: The compilation showcases a nice balance between T. Rex’s ’67 – ’70 psych-folk incarnation under the name Tyrannosaurus Rex and the better known pioneering and perfecting of glam-rock that defined the first ’71 – 73 era under the shortened T. Rex moniker. Kicking things off is the thick, woozily-rocking interpretation of “Fist Heart Mighty Dawn Dart”; one of two covers pulled from Tyrannosaurus Rex’s fourth and best album, 1970’s A Beard of Stars. Ty then double-dips into the consummate T. Rex (and for that matter, the entire glam-rock movement) achievement, The Slider, with a rendition of “Buick MacKane” followed by an excellent dirtying-up of the title track. Clearly digging deep with the ear and understanding of a super-fan, next up is Ty’s awesome tackling of “Woodland Rock”-an Electric Warriorouttake that also surfaced on the B-side to 1971’s non-album “Hot Love” single. Returning to Tyrannosaurus Rex fare for the two tracks that originally concluded the Ty-Rex 1 EP, we have “Salamanda Palaganda” from 1968’s Prophets, Seers & Sages:  The Angels of the Ages and A Beard of Stars’ “Elemental Child”. Rounding out this much-needed collection are “Cat Black” (from Tyrannosaurus Rex’s 1969 album, Unicorn) andElectric Warrior’s closing song, “The Motivator” from the Ty-Rex II 7”. Wrapping up this compilation discography of Ty-Rex material is the aforementioned previously-unreleased bonus track, Ty’s cover of “20th Century Boy” (a non-album T. Rex single from 1973).
