I recorded this mix a few years ago, and I know it's difficult to stand out amongst the thousands of other Dilla tributes, but, what the hell, here it is. This mix was recorded in one take, but I edited the playlist at least a dozen times. I also let some of the tracks run longer than usual, because they're just too good. Almost two full hours of J Dilla. Every beat on this mix was done by Jay Dee (with the exception of the Platinum Pied Pipers track and No one Knows), and a good portion feature his rhymes. Again, in no way is this definitive. I tried to showcase his various styles, including raw joints from the Ruff Draft EP, classics from his production stint with A Tribe Called Quest and even the R&B / Neo-soul tracks. Like always, some original samples sprinkled in for flavor. Turn that shit up.....

An artist's impact and longevity to their craft are important elements to take into consideration before that honor is bestowed.  When it comes to the Queen of R&B, there are many names that are synonymous with that legacy through the decades. When it comes to Hip Hop and R&B, there is only one name that can hold the weight, Mary J Blige.
Twenty years removed from the release of her debut album, we've witnessed the coronation from young talented singer from Yonkers to The Queen of Hip Hop and R&B. Eight multi-platinum albums, nine grammy awards, and countless classic contributions, Her Highness' music spans over three decades.  She is the only artist with Grammy Award wins in Pop, Rap, Gospel, and R&B.

Today to celebeate the 20th Anniversary of the release of her debut album, What's The 411? we threw together a a mix of ten dope "hardcore rap and Mary J Blige records.

Originally inspired by a mix I made for an ex-girlfriend's 1 year "date-aversary", I decided to expand on some of the blends and redirect the concept a bit. Where that mix was my love letter to her, this mix's sole responsibility is "mood" music. Many songs here talk about "love" but just as many cover heartbreak, lust, and just flat out seduction; all emotions and actions that can take place on one of those memorable evenings where the planets align and desire and impulse perfectly intertwine. This mix is not about squeezing in as many slow jams as I can in an hour plus. The songs are meant to play for a while, the blends are meant to be stretched out. Wait til it gets dark tonight, press play, lay back, and let the music be your guide. I'm sure you'll figure out the rest later on...
