On December 2, a dope single of reworks by Hans Hass releases via The Outer Edge. You can now stream my contribution for this single. Please note that I did not “remix” the track, but it is “RE-MIXED”, which means there were several mixing adjustments to make it more suitable for DJs. The main drums were raised in volume, the guitar is a bit more mono, the psych part at the end got cleaned up and was made playable by adding drums to it, etc.. It’s my second lesson in a series of Soviet Groove mixes. This time my attempt was to cover some of Georgia’s unique musical output from the 70s and 80s. I hope you enjoy the distinct Georgian flavour in the songs, mostly recognisable in the traditional rhythmic and melodic approaches in the vocals. Furthermore, Georgia’s Pop music had strong influences from Jazz and Rock, and musicians from the small Caucasian country weren’t shy of using western compositions and adaptations on their, always state-controlled, albums. This amalgamation of styles makes it one of the most wonderful music relics from the Soviet era.

The mix solely features material that has been officially released on the Soviet state label Melodia. The artwork is an adapted version of VIA 75’s album “Для Тебя Живу, Грузия Моя” from 1984.

The Georgian Groove Essentials (Free Download)

Scientist, who was responsible for the source material and cuts for the Soviet Tape, dug out the original records again and mixed the tracks with Fulgeance’s reworks. The album is mainly based on samples from Soviet Pop and Jazz tunes as well as some completely rare and odd loops from records that may still be unknown to even the most serious Soviet Groove collectors.

This mix gives you a perfect taste of what the music originally sounded like and how it got reconstructed and transformed for today's music world. Additionally, DJ Scientist enjoyed remixing some of the tracks, added unheard vocals and included alternative versions of some of the songs which will make listening even more exciting.

Persuant to the music, the cover art of the Soviet Tape was based on a vintage Soviet design. The cover for the mix is based on that original art, simply tranforming the names Fulgeance and DJ Scientist into cyrillic letters giving it a completely authentic look. A very limited CD version of the mix was featured on the special edition of the album by the way. The regular version from “The Soviet Tape Vol. 1” is still available via First Word Records. “Keine Musik für Niemand” is a special full power funky rock set covering the indespensable, indisputable, yet overlooked “Agit-” and Polit-Rock genre with tracks by Lokomotive Kreuzberg, Fasia, Oktoberklub, M.E.K. Bilk, Ihre Kinder, and many others. The mix covers music from the 70s up to the early 80s, full of heavy breaks, undiscovered Krautrock gems and more.

The cover is a remake of the über-classic Ton Steine Scherben “Keine Macht für Niemand” (“No Power for Nobody”) album artwork. I changed the title to “Keine Musik für Niemand” (No Music for Nobody) stating that most of the songs remained totally underground and spread only in the left wing radical scene – being too offensive and strange for most “normal” people.

To finalize Fulgeance & DJ Scientist’s “The Soviet Tape Vol. 1” project we are proud to offer one last free download.
Scientist has got his hands on album favourite “Vendetta” to create the “Sci-Fi Edit”. This alternate mix stays close to Fulgeance's original, adding some new chops, a new arrangement, as well as throwing in the original Russian vocal sample. This is one for DJs and music lovers alike!

Meanwhile, Fulgeance and DJ Scientist are working hard on the second volume of the Soviet Tape which will arrive in the first half of 2016. Also stay tuned for more fresh edits and new tracks by the producer team.

Over the past few years, DJ Scientist has become an important figure in the German Hip-Hop, Rare Groove and Electronic scene. Aside from his own projects, such as the two solo albums “For Better, For Worse” and “The One Man Band Instrumentals” as well as “The Soviet Tape” album together with French producer Fulgeance, he has produced and co-produced several other LPs, EPs and singles. Additionally, the fanatic record collector released mixes of rare Xian Funk and Soviet Grooves which brought him a lot of attention as a DJ and musicologist. 

Starting his DJ-career in 1995 and dropping mixtapes to spread his name in his home town of Munich, he put out his first record in 2001 – a dj tool called “Mad Science Breaks”. One year later, the “Misantropolis EP”, mainly produced by Scientist, was released on Audiac. From 2002 to 2013, he put his main effort into his own label Equinox Records were he has been curating and coordinating a vast amount of more than 50 releases over the years.  In 2004, he produced three tracks for the label’s first compilation “Welcome to the Neo Golden Age – A Sound Exposure Vol. 1”.  Being part of the Equinox 10inch Series, his 4 track “Journey Goodbye EP” (2006) contained the outstanding “Atarius” as well as the soulful and bluesy “Autumn Leaves”.  Since late 2007, DJ Scientist has mainly been producing and recording music with rapper/multi-instrumentalist/singer Ceschi Ramos (of Fake Four Inc.).  Releases were the singles “Same Old Love Song” (2009, with 2Mex, Awol One & Myka Nyne) and “Count On It / Bad Jokes” (2008) as well as the album, “The One Man Band Broke Up”, released in june 2010. In the same year, an instrumental version of the album with Ceschi was released under the name “The One Man Band Instrumentals”, which became Scientist’s first full-length solo work. In 2011, Ceschi and Scientist released another EP called “Shorted Circuits” and continued working on new music. With his “The Artless Cuckoo EP”, that dropped in early 2012, Scientist put focus on his solo works again and released his album “For Better, For Worse” in October 2012. In 2013, he started a new project together with French beatmaker Fulgeance called “The Soviet Tape”. The first single “Moscow Nightlife” was released in October 2014, followed by the full length album in February 2015 on the British label First Word, which featured artists like Blu and Open Mike Eagle.

Aside from his production work, DJ Scientist has performed, opened up for or shared stages with artists such as Sage Francis, The Pharcyde, Noah23, M.I.A., DJ Faust & DJ Shortee, Sole & The Skyrider Band, Egyptian Lover, Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop, Latyrx (Lateef & Lyrics Born), DiViNCi, Boca45, Thesis Sahib, Mirko Machine, Busy Bee, and has toured Europe four times. As an executive producer and project coordinator he has been involved in releases by artists such as 2econd Class Citizen, David Vangel, Kraddy (Glitch Mob founding member), and many others. Furthermore, Scientist wrote articles for magazines such as Waxpoetics, The Vinyl Factory and Backspin as well as his own underground music mag DEAD Magazine. His “Godly Grooves” mix series with DJ Arok, that contained completely unknown German Xian Funk and Rare Groove tracks from the late 60s and 70s, made a lot of noise in the German speaking territory and received great reviews. In 2013 he debuted on Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel podcast with an incredible selection of 70s funk and rock music from the former Soviet Union. The mix was followed in 2014 by “The Georgian Groove Essentials”, which solely featured music from the little known former Soviet country, which Scientist visited in the same year for a DJ performance in Tbilisi.
