More than 18 years into their musical journey, The Herbaliser are now gearing up for the release of THERE WERE SEVEN (8th October). It all began in the early 1990s when West London duo @JakeWherry and Ollie Teeba discovered a shared passion for hip-hop, rare groove, funk and jazz. To coincide with the launch of the documentary celebrating the history of the legendary Mo' Wax Records, we asked one of our favourite Montreal DJs, Phil Larochelle, to dive into the back catalogue and record a session consisting of his all-time favourites. 

The imprint founded in 1992 by James Lavelle was home to the some of the forward-thinking genre-defying beats. From DJ Krush to DJ Shadow, Motorbass to Unkle, the label was a melting-pot of Jazz, Hip Hop, Breaks, Trip Hop, Electronica and whatever else artists felt like putting on a slice of wax.

Tribute to MO' WAX RECORDS - Selected by Phil Larochelle

Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way. 

Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.

3 years in the making, 3 DJs working with over 150 tracks to recreate one of the seminal sampling albums of all time. Cheeba, Moneyshot and I bring you ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’, our tribute to the classic Beastie Boys album ‘Paul’s Boutique’. Remixed and re-imagined from all the original samples plus a cappellas, period interviews and the Beasties’ own audio commentary from the reissued release.

Add to this a custom illustration from Paul’s Boutique super-fan and all-round great guy Jim Mahfood, and you have an alternate version of the album. The mix was over half way finished when we heard the tragic news of Adam Yauch‘s passing this May so this is also our nod to his memory, RIP MCA.

Big respect to Cheeba and Moneyshot for all their hard work and for the latter for inspiring the project with his classic mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ three years ago. Obviously massive respect goes out to The Beasties, The Dust Brothers, Mario C. and all involved in the making of the original album.

Dj Kicks - Nightmares On Wax

In 2009, I consulted for, and appeared in, Activision's DJ Hero video game.   As part of my involvement, I performed at quite a few industry events and eventually did a couple of club dates.  Some of these sets were more rehearsed than others, and the quality varied.  This one, recorded live on Halloween night at a KCRW benefit, was far and away my favorite of the bunch...both in terms of technical display and song selection.  I'll post some of the other recorded sets later, there's some nice moments along the way.- DJ Shadow

It had been nearly 15 years since my first go-round, so I felt obligated to go all the way in. This first part was all about the new, showcasing my favorite underground beats & stuff.  As with my first Essential Mix, the gears shift radically at the halfway mark, so it seemed to make sense in a streaming context to let this power-hour stand on its own."

"If you're having a difficult time identifying any of these tracks, there's a reason for that...they're all derived from vintage demo cassettes, most of which were unheard by the general public until this mix.  It's something I had been planning for some time, and it all feeds back into the 'crate digger' aesthetic I've always valued so much as a DJ.  When the mix originally aired, I had to edit some of the language, so here it is for the first time in full uncensored glory."
