Aly Abji - Tech / Deep House Mix (December 2013)

This 3-hour set played at Gorg-O-Mish on Saturday, September 10th, 2022 is dedicated to my good friend Misha and his new wife Tiffany who were married that day.

Misha single-handedly changed my life by introducing me to Electronic (Trance and House) music back in 2008 and then taking me to Gorgomish After Hours in Vancouver (where this set was recorded live) for the first time in 2010. Misha was also the best man at my wedding.

I wanted to play something special for Misha and Tiffany, given they would be coming to Gorg-O-Mish literally after their wedding day which from my memory was a very long day when I got married. 

When I got to the club I plugged in 3 USB sticks. One in each of the 3 CDJs, and each representing a different era of music that I’ve played over the years:

RED: Shadowfigure (NOW) | BLUE: Aly Abji circa 2015-2019 | YELLOW: Aly Abji the Trance/Progressive DJ circa 2012-2014

RED + BLUE + YELLOW. The Primary Colors. Over the 3-hour span, I showcased some of my more advanced mixing skills as I mixed a variety of sounds/genres while staying true to both the Shadowfigure and Gorg-O-Mish sounds.

I hope you will give this set a full listen. I am all about good sounds that make me feel good, and I do have a “sound” or “atmosphere” that I like to create. If you’ve seen me play, no matter what genre, you’ll find a common thread throughout.

If you're in Vancouver or ever visiting the city I'm playing at Gorg-O-Mish once a month or so, and have been for more than 10 years. New faces and friends are always welcomed at Gorg-O-Mish. 

Congratulations to the newly married couple Misha and Tiffany. I hope you'll enjoy listening to this set and the fond memories of that day for many years to come.

The first single from Shadowfigure, Disco Lights, is a gritty and groovy percussion-driven sequence featuring Shadowfigure’s signature style of a techno foundation, progressive layering, and melodic seasoning with catchy stabs and vocals. Inspired by the flashing lights of the afterhours dancefloor, Disco Lights was handcrafted to fit into Shadowfigure’s regular afterhours sets. With a heavy kick tuned to a simple bass line, the sharp drum hits, claps, and percussion are programmed to get the dance floor’s attention while layering in rich textures and sexy vocals for an energetic flow. Staying true to the bass-heavy underground vibe he is known for, the vocals, percs, and synth hits take center stage at the break, leading to a satisfying release designed to whip dancers into a frenzy. Aim's track "Underground Crown Holders" was originally released in 1999 and re-released on ATIC Records in 2014 on the compilation "Drum Machines & Vhs Dreams: The Best of Aim 1996-2006". Mixmag called it “a timeless retrospective of [Aim’s] best beats… reminding us of the haunting crisp aesthetics and cinematic breaks and samples that defined an era."

The groove inspired me. I play House music. The rest is history. Enjoy my remix, which probably doesn't hold a candle to the original release that surely inspired others. Now in my arsenal for DJ sets, paying respects to early innovators in electronic and hip hop music.

The original track from Aim "Underground Crown Holders" contains samples of "Sugar Me/Standing in the Road" by Klaus Wunderlich, "One Love" by Nas feat. Q-Tip, "Simon Zealotes" by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber and "Anything U Want" by Rae & Christian feat. QNC. Remixing it with a 2024 electronic modern twist takes this story to the next level. Everything's a remix of a remix of a remix. That's the beauty of music in our electronic age.
