It's unfortunately timely that I'm re-sharing this mix. We truly lost a great one today, Biz Markie, the cornerstone of humour in hip-hop with his larger than life cartoon-ish personality and demeanour. The B-I-Z's discography, legacy and history in hip-hop ran deep and his crates and music knowledge ran even deeper. 

I feel extremely humbled & blessed in hindsight to have spent time with Biz Markie in Australia, having both shared the stage with him in Sydney as well as spending a couple of days hanging out in Brisbane together with his brother DJ Cool V. We did what Biz does best and hit Chinatown in Brisbane for Chinese food, went diggin' for records and vintage toys and nerded out for many hours sharing, disecting, politicin' and listening to raer breakbeats, grooves, raps, acapellas and stems. It's one of the very few times I was absolutely geeked out meeting one of my heroes. There's been too many times when I've learned  that my childhood rap heroes are actually jerks, even more-so with the advent of social media. There are too many hilarious stories to tell and memories of that tour which will have to wait for another time.

This short but sweet 14-minute promo "mega-mix" was done in one take on two decks and a mixer at the request of the promoter of the down under tour. I kept it simple and just blended 7 of my favourite Biz tracks. There's obviously some deeper diggin' to be done in Biz's extensive catalog and I'm sure there'll be some great tribute mixes forthcoming but I kept this one as is because it's from a time and a place that hopefully some others can appreciate.

Nobody Beats the Biz. Never. Rest in Peace and my most genuine condolences to his family and loved ones.

After spending hours in my own crates due to this forthcoming sale, I got inspired, hopped on the decks and rocked a live 90 minute mix of soul, funk, library, jazz, disco, hip-hop, etc. There's joints and genres from all around the world. I went hard (pause) on the doubles at some points, and there's some instrumental/acapella blends up there too… 

This was an spur of the moment practice session that was never to be given to the public, just to listen to later for ideas… no playlists, no preparation… A few mates enjoyed it whom I sent it to and prompted me to get it out there… Please excuse all the sloppy mixes, cuts, etc. I wanted to keep it raw like the mixes of the 90's… feedback is appreciated.

All done in one take, no preparation, just a erratic journey into the mind of a beat obsessed, scratchaholic OCD record junkie with a super short attention span. A lot of ground is covered on this mix… a gang of samples, both used and unused, library records, soul, funk, disco, hip-hop, australian records, japanese stuff, drum breaks, b-boy breaks, bongo breaks, turntablist works, electronic stuff, some mega RAER acapella blends with funk loops on the fly… 

I hope you all enjoy this series… I'm trying to take what I learned from that Soulman World Of Beats 2 mixtape back in the day that started me on this beat mission. It's the end of the Winter Bluntz Trilogy, Hoth style, takin' out AT-AT's. The victory lap on a Taun Taun, passin' you sucker ducks on land speeders… I just finished doing this mix, and I feel like I just entered the DMC for two hours straight, my brain is spent and I'm ready for that blunt.

It's been over a month since I've been in the lab and it took me a little while to get warmed up this evening, so bear with this as  it's my most ambitious effort yet. As the weather starts to heat up, I thought I should get that heat out the crates too! Here's a list of the genres and things that I managed to lock down in 73 minutes of the wheels of steel:

Disco, Funk, Soul, Soundtracks, Reggae, Library Records, Dirty Funky Soul 45s, $1 Bin Classics, Drum Breaks, a * TONNE * of used and unused samples, Private Press secret squirrels, Experimental/Electronic stuff, Blaxploitation radio spots, Chinese TV commercials, Australian Punk, Psych, Fuzz, Jazz, Latin, Video Game music, Stereo Test records, Pinky Violence raers, B-Boy Breaks, an Idris Muhamad (R.I.P.) "extraction" from my man BAPT in Paris, a couple of seldom played Nas joints, a Lakim Shabazz freestyle, some live remix action with Rakim, Fat Joe, 50 Cent, The Game, Alkaholiks and Percee P all gettin' the live "SHEEPMIX" treatment (check around the 34 minute mark). As always, I gave this mix the world treatment with special joints from India, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Taiwan, Africa, Israel, South America, Thailand, China, Italy, Russia, Hungary and from all over Europe and the world. David Axelrod sits nicely besides James Last on this mix… Finally, J-Zone laced me with his new "Lunch Breaks" record, so I cut up a handful of those breaks throughout the mix; see if you can tell his drums from the 70's joints, it's tough!

ELECTRO ACUPUNCTURE: an electrofied b-boy xperience

[ DJ SHEEP'S DEBUT MIXTAPE FROM 1998 featuring: 80's West Coast Electro, Miami Bass, Electro Funk, Freestyle, Scratching, Vocoders, Egyptian Lover, Star Wars samples and more! ]

Before I was a "turntablist", "digger", "battle DJ" or any of that stuff, I held it down the turntables at shows for some of the illest b-boy crews of Australia: Rapid Fire, Wicked Force, B-Boy Allstars and my own Cyber Force and Skill @ Will crews.

I travelled with "Rapid Fire" and repped for Australia at the "Battle of the Year" also holding it down that next weekend in Holland at "Back To Planet Rock" with Big Daddy Kane and Phife Dawg in the house!

My education about this form of music came from the amazing "Streetsounds Electro" series of records [thanks Morgan Khan]. I was lucky enough to get the box-set in a trade with a pen-pal in the UK back in the day. Inspired by that series, in 1998, with a humble crate of records, I recorded this tape and handmade 400 copies to start my mixtape hustle. Thank you to everyone who bought one and SALUTE! to anyone who kept it all these years #RAER.

At the time this mix was recorded my life was influenced by a cyberpunk state of mind, star wars, vocoders, taped up pieces of cardboard, tracksuits, headspins, graffiti, tuxan and watching some of the most amazing acrobatically impossible shit ever! It has always been a honour to have a front row seat as a b-boy DJ.

Seeing as this is still my most "requested" material here in Brisbane  and considered a "classic" by some. I'd like to finally offer this mix with a track list. To all b-boys worldwide, continue to push the boundaries and find new music to break to.

It's been a decade since both my last installment of the Ign'ant mix tape series and my three-year column in HHC Magazine. After working hard to profile the most vile, rude, offensive rap music I could possibly procure, I decided to bury both endeavors and move on to other things. Here's a new trilogy of mixes from the "Diggers Dozen" event that I put on in Brisbane, Australia back in 2014. Each of these themed mixes each feature 12 top-tier records hand picked from the Bulletproof Crates played out live on 2 turntables, mixer and a Kaossilator.

This first mix is the "Ethnic Crate" featuring some off the wall digs dug up in dusty record stores, flea markets & junk shops in the depths of Israel, Lebanon, Japan, Germany, Thailand, Belgium, Australia and of course, the US. Expect some heavy drum breaks with some exotic rock, psych & jazz sounds in the mix.

The next mix in the trilogy will drop week and continue this theme with 12 x 7" 45s.

After almost 2 decades of deliberation and painfully listening to "textbook" "Aussie" mixes from DJ's who aren't DJs and rappers & diggeurs who were suddenly DJs, I decided it was time I delved into the world famous Bulletproof Crates and specifically into the Aussie section to let heads know what's really up in the Antipodean crates when it comes to diggin' from a beat head perspective.

Here's 53 minutes of heavy hittin' top tier jazz, funk, soul, disco, drum breaks, post punk, electronics and some face meltin' cover versions. All cut up live in one take, by an actual DJ; break mix style with turntablist skills, on 2 turntables at the Bulletproof Lab in Brisbane on August 30th 2017.

Shouts to Giles Peterson and Mike Who for premiering the mix on Worldwide FM and a courteous fuck you to all the bullshit "labels" and record stores reissuing stuff that Aussie diggaz been diggin' before it was a #hashtag — dig under the radar and stop instagram vinyl circle jerkin' each other off — in the timeless words of DJ Premier, "ya'll are violating straight up and down".
